Chapter 49 by zewesman zewesman

"So, who has names for a dragon?"

The Name Game

“OMGITSSOCUTEIWANNAPETHER!” screeched Miho so fast that John could barely make out the words. Miho rushed towards the dragon with her hand out, her sudden speech and motions frightened the young dragon, which caused her to attempt to breath what John assumed was fire at Miho. Instead of fire, all that came out was a puff of smoke, but the reaction caused Miho to jump back quite far thanks to her magic, with her happy face replaced with a pouty one. “MIKURU! THE DRAGON TRIED TO ATTACK ME!” cried the girl, sad to be rejected by the cute creature. She brought her hand up, ready to attack, but Mikuru grabbed her hand and **** it down.

“Enough. You scared the poor thing so it acted based on its instincts. Why don’t you try again, but approach it slowly and with your hand outstretched so it can sniff you,” the elder sister instructed her younger sister. Miho nodded, she understood her mistake and would not make it again. She now approached the dragon, who was cuddled up on John’s lap after he got her off him and sat up, with her hand extended. The baby dragon, not feeling as threatened this time around, cautiously extended its head towards the hand, and gave it a sniff before retreating back to John’s safety. Miho slumped down, the feeling of rejection upsetting her.
“Hey now,” John said, looking the dragon directly in the eyes, “these are my…these are important people to me so you need to be nice and like them too, understand?” The dragon cocked her head as John talked and once he finished gave him a lick on the side of the face and then leapt towards Miho. Miho, caught off guard by the sudden attack, caught the dragon in her arms but instead of falling down like John, she used a gust of wind to bring the two gently to the ground. Once the dragon realized what happened, she launched a licking attack on Miho, who giggled and hugged the dragon.

“OMGILOVEHERSOMUCH!SHESTHEGREATEST!” cried the girl as she nuzzled the dragon, who returned the affection.

“I think they like each other.”

“Yes, it would seem so. So, what name shall you give her?”

“I’m not sure. I mean, I could go with a normal, plain name like Jane or Megan, or something more unique and fantasy-like. I mean, she is a dragon, afterall,” John pondered, not sure what to do.

“Yes, I agree. She deserves a unique name, one that no other would have. Afterall, you did say she was the last of her clan, correct?” asked Mikuru, who watched as Miho now used her air based powers to help the young dragon learn to fly. Idena, being a harpy, also assisted the whelp in flight training.
“Guys loooooooooooooooook! I’m helping her learn to fllllllllllllllllllllly! Do you think when she gets bigger we can ride on her back?!
OMGTHAT’DBESOAWESOME!ICOULDDROPDOWNFROMTHESKIESASSHEDIVEBOMBSTHEENEMIESNEXTTOME!” Miho’s imagination once again took control, which caused her to once again talk in one giant gust of words, much like her gusts of wind. John slowly learned what she would say, but he was still far off from knowing what she said in one go.

“Maybe?” John replied, he did not know if that would happen but he did agree that it would be rather awesome to ride a dragon into battle. “I mean, I’d totally be up for that too, right Mikuru?”

“…I have to admit, riding a dragon into battle is a sound strategy…” John could hear a tinge of fear in her voice as she spoke about it.
“Something wrong with that idea, Mikuru?” asked John, concerned about Mikuru.

“No. It’s just that…I don’t like heights. I like having my feet planted firmly on the ground. When we had to come to America from Japan, I took some sleeping pills so I’d sleep through the flight,” Mikuru explained to John. John nodded, her fear of heights made sense to him. She has earth based magic so it’d make sense that she’d want to stay near the ground. The further away from it she gets, the less safe she probably feels. We’ll have to figure out how to travel with her if Miho and I ride the dragon into battle, thought John as he and Mikuru continued to watch Miho and Idena train the dragon in flying. The dragon was a rather quick learner. While Miho had to constantly shoot air under its wings for it to stay aloft, it had quickly learned how to glide until it found another gust of wind, which Miho had randomly set to blow through the room, which helped the dragon to learn to glide precisely. Idena would show the young creature what to do, and it would copy Idena’s movements. John guessed her wings weren’t big enough yet to generate enough lift to make her fly, but as she grew she would be able to do that. For now though, the whelp could at least glide along the winds, which was still an advantage. If the dragon stuck close to Miho, who could generate wind for her, the whelp would be a great asset in battle. “If you three keep that up, we’ll be able to have air superiority over our enemies!” exclaimed John, which caused Miho and Idena to squeal happily and embrace, the two kissing each other passionately.

“Master, have you thought of a name yet?” asked Idena as she broke her kiss with Miho. The whelp glided down and landed in front of John, who gave her a smile. The dragon gave off a loving purr as she walked in a quick circle and laid down to rest.

“Yeah I have. I don’t want to give her a normal name. She deserves a special name since she’s a special dragon, the last of her clan,” John informed the girls as he looked at the whelp curled up, and smiled. “I’m going to name her Yatina, after my first female character in an MMO, and one of my favorites. You hear that girl? You are now Yatina, the last scion of your clan and this kingdom’s resident dragon!” Yatina’s head perked up when she heard this and gave out her mightiest roar of approval.

“Yay! Welcome to the team, Yatina! Me, you, and Idena make up the air ****! We’ll keep the skies clear for John and Mikuru, right?!” Miho asked her fellow air based teammates. Idena gave her an approving kiss while Yatina let out another roar in agreement.

“Sounds good, now what do you say me and you ladies go out to eat? It’s nearly dinner time,” John asked the girls, who all approved of the idea. Yatina also got up expectantly, but was quickly stopped by John. “Sorry Yatina, but I can’t have a dragon following me in the real world, you have to stay here,” he told the whelp, whose face immediately was one of sadness. “I know girl, I want you there too, but you can’t come. Well, unless you are like WoW’s dragons and can turn into a human, then you could come.” When Yatina heard those words her head perked up and she nodded to John. John was confused by that action but accepted the dragon knew something he did not. “I think there is some small game here for you to hunt, so why don’t you work on your hunting skills and go get yourself some food?” John informed the baby dragon, who gave out one last happy roar and, with the help of Miho, flew out of the castle and into the countryside.
“So, where are we gonna go?” asked Miho.

“Well, I got an idea for where we could go,” said John as he wrapped his arms around the three girls as they teleported back into his room.
