Chapter 7 by Papas_Liebling Papas_Liebling

What's next?

The Kiss (Good Ending)

For a heartbeat, none of them moved.

Laura recognized it clearly and unmistakably: this was the fragile point that decided her future.

She could still pull back. Everything would remain exactly as before. Controlled. Contained. Safe. Just as she wished.

She only had to lean away.

Say something light. Laugh briefly. Break the moment.

Do it.

But she didn’t.

Because there was something else, lurking just beneath the fear of losing control. Quieter, but all the more persistent, was the fear of being alone. She needed someone she could talk to, hang out with, someone she could… kiss?

Could Justin be that someone?

Her gaze flickered to his lips. She caught herself—and yet didn’t pull away.

Justin hadn’t moved.

That was what made it so dangerous.

He wasn’t closing the distance. Wasn’t taking advantage of the situation. He was just there. Close enough that she could feel his presence, the comfort of it. But he was not crossing the line. He waited for her.

Laura swallowed.

This is your choice.

The realization landed heavier than anything else. If this happened, it would be because she allowed it. Because she wanted it.

Her chest tightened.

I don’t want this. I've just gone through that awful breakup. I don't want to give up my freedom again and tie myself down to a man.

The thought came quickly. But it didn’t settle. Didn’t convince.

Because right behind it, the voice in her head answered:

That’s not true. You want this. Not him specifically. But this.

Connection.

Relationship.

Someone who understood her without asking too many questions because he already knew what she would say before she said it.

Her gaze lifted back to his eyes.

Justin was still watching her—not pushing. As if he had planned everything well in advance and already knew how it would turn out.

That thought flickered for a second.

Then it slipped away.

Her fingers tightened into fists. She didn’t want to push him away, but she didn't want to pull him closer either.

“I don’t…” she started, then stopped.

What exactly was she trying to defend?

Her freedom? Or the fact that she was willing to give it up again?

Justin shifted. Barely closer. Just enough to make clear that he wasn’t going to leave.

“Hey,” he whispered. “Don’t overthink it.”

Simple advice. But it landed exactly where it needed to.

Laura let out a small, almost **** sigh. That was the problem, wasn’t it?

Thinking too much.

Her shoulders sagged. This didn’t have to be a big decision. Nothing that affected her great future.

Something small.

Easy.

Her gaze softened. “I’m not overthinking.”

Justin’s lips curved slightly, like he didn’t believe her but wasn’t going to challenge it.

Again, that ease.

Laura leaned in.

This time, she didn’t stop halfway.

The distance closed naturally, as if everything had been leading up to this all along.

When their lips met, it wasn’t explosive. Not overwhelming.

It was just right.

Laura felt something inside her loosening—not snap, not break—simply release. She was ready for more.
