The Hidden Mission

“Paige Green,” You tell the hospital receptionist.

“Are you related to the patient?” The receptionist, named Sara, asked.

“Umm… yes… I’m her brother?” You lie.

The plump dark-haired woman starts typing into her computer terminal, and you tap your fingers on her desk with nervous energy.

“Mister Matt… Paige Green is currently pre-surgery. We'll contact you when she is finished,” Sara says in her Spanish accent.

“Surgery? What for?” You felt your heart race.

“Matt!” A recognizable male voice shouts. “What are you doing here, mate?”

The recognizable assistant producer, George, comes up to you and is surprised to see you at the hospital. George still has on his headsets and says, “Aren’t you supposed to be at the hotel?”

“What’s going on, George? Why is Paige in the hospital?”

“Mate, you’re going to get into a lot of trouble if you don’t head back to the hotel. Like serious trouble. You might even be kicked off the show,” George says.

“I just want to check on Paige, and I’ll get back. What’s wrong with her?”

“She has appendicitis. The surgery should be over soon. She’ll be fine, you need to get back to the hotel.”

“I’m not leaving George until I see her,” You say adamantly.

“Bosses won’t like it, Matt. You might be in breach of contract and kicked off the show for this.” George warns again, concern and compassion in his face. “Look, when she is done surgery, I’ll try to get you a visit with her, but you gotta promise me to get back to the hotel. If bosses catch you skipping out on the schedule, then I won’t be held responsible for what happens to you.”

You nod, full well knowing the consequences. You didn’t care about being kicked out. You didn’t even care about losing the AMA. You needed to see Paige.

You sit patiently in the waiting room and tap your feet nervously. About half an hour later, the doctor informs George and the rest of the crew on Paige’s condition. You can overhear him say, “She’s resting right now. The surgery went like clockwork, and she was waking up from anesthesia, she can be released by tomorrow.”

You breathe a sigh of relief, and George comes to you and repeats what the doctor said. “Now, you better get along. Paige will be fine. Get back to your hotel.”

“Can I just see her before I go?”

“It’s not up to me, mate, you aren’t related to her. She’ll be released tomorrow so you can see her at the Villa then.”

You frown and nod. Getting up, you start to leave, and George orders a ride for you. Before you could step out of the hospital, you receive a new notification and check them. It was an unaddressed text message.

Paige is in room 404

The elevator clings open, and you walk down the hallway of the hospital recovery rooms. 401 passes you and then 402, and you make your way to 404. Through the looking glass, you can see a familiar redhead turned over and staring out of the window.

The door creaks as you turn the handle and walk-in. Paige turns over, a bit startled by her intruder, and then recognition lights her face.

“Matt… what are you doing here?” Paige asks, wonderment in her eyes.

“I wanted to see you,” You say. “How are you doing?”

Paige smiles, “Better… now that you are here.”

You pull a stool over to her and take her hand. Her red hair was frazzled and her makeup undone showing her deeply freckled face.

“Did the crew allow you to be here?” She asks, concern in her voice.

“Not really… I kind of snuck away from my date to be here,” You say.

“Matt… that’s really bad. I appreciate you coming, but you could be kicked off the island if you do something like that,” Paige says warmly, though she looks away from you and you can tell she was smiling from ear to ear.

“Paige, I’ve been trying to do the right thing. All of my actions so far have been dictated with the need to try to stay as long as I could on the island with you. I’ve never did something I wanted to do regardless of the consequences. What’s the point of doing everything I’ve done and staying on the Island if I can never just be with you?” You ask.

Paige smiles and straightens up on her bed and reaches over and kisses you tenderly on the lips. “I’m just glad that for once, you decided to be with me. Thank you, Matt.”

You get into her bed. Paige snuggles herself against you, her head resting beneath your chin, and you hold her.

“Was your date with Evelyn that bad?” Paige asks stroking your chest while you stroked her hair in turn. You miss being alone with her like this.

“No… not it was pretty great. She’s a nice girl Paige, and I think she just wants to be closer to you,” You say.

“If we get back, I’ll talk to her. I love her... but I want her to be her own person. Her mom already babies her, and I don’t… I just want her to be herself and not me or anyone else she doesn’t want to be,” Paige says, sighing.

“What are you doing?” You ask Paige. Paige gets up, and you can see her toss aside her blanket and grabbing a jacket on another chair. Paige stretches out with her fingers extended and places her hands on her hips, smiling triumphantly.

“Let’s go for a walk. You and me.” Paige says, smiling and then takes your arm. “You being spontaneous makes me want to do what I want.”

“Are you allowed to?” You asked.

“I’m fine. Let’s go.”

“Go where?” You ask her.

“We haven’t been on a date in so long. Let’s hit the town,” Paige says and walks to the door.
