The Gear of Fate
A thick fog clung to the streets of London, the smell of coal and burnt oil mingling with the damp scent of leather and old wood. The great clock of Big Ben chimed midnight with a heavy, weary toll. In the subterranean laboratory of Baron Anthony Stark, blue sparks flew from complex, hissing, steam-powered apparatuses.
"I thought you promised no explosions this time, Anthony!" Dr. Banner’s voice grumbled from behind the spectacles perched precariously on his nose. He carefully poured a luminescent green liquid into a glass vial. "This steam-energy device is more a 'ticking bomb' than a 'Stark Oscillator,' in my estimation."
Anthony Stark, dressed in a silk waistcoat and a slightly askew cravat, offered a mischievous grin. "Patience, Bruce! This invention could revolutionize air travel, or... well, at least cause a delightful commotion." He gestured toward a colossal, brass-plated suit of armor standing in the corner, its steam pipes and cogs gleaming under the lantern light. This was his "Iron Man," a testament to his genius and his folly.
Suddenly, a cry echoed from the streets above. The large glass panes of the lab began to rattle violently as a tremendous explosion rocked the entirety of London.
"Blast it all!" Anthony shouted. "What in the Queen’s name was that?"
Before they could react, the secret access hatch to the lab burst open with a resounding thud, and Captain Steven Rogers, his military uniform slightly torn and his steel shield gripped tightly, tumbled in. "Mr. Stark! An assailant! A colossal creature of steel and steam is marching towards Parliament. The Royal Guard... they're falling!"
Dr. Banner’s face drained of color. "No... it cannot be. My 'Titan' Elixir experiment! I failed to contain it!"
"No time for explanations, Doctor!" Steve snapped, his eyes hard with urgency. "London is in peril!"
At that very moment, a bolt of azure lightning splintered the ceiling, and a tall, bearded man with long hair, wielding a massive hammer seemingly forged from the storm itself, descended. "A great menace I sense in this realm! What ails you, Midgard?" Thor, the God of Thunder, surveyed the scene with a grave expression.
"Good heavens..." Anthony murmured. "It appears the time for causing a commotion has arrived."
He rushed toward his armor. As he did, a woman in a dark dress and piercing eyes stepped out from the shadows. Madame Natalia Romanoff, a deadly spy from an Eastern European secret service (likely the Russian Empire), who had been tracking the 'Titan' itself, calmly drew a small, ornamental derringer from her holster. "The Titan? Then the rumors were true. A steam-powered brute, sprung from the failed experiments of one Bruce Banner."
Anthony, with the aid of enormous gears, sealed himself into his armor. The steam pipes began to whistle, and he was instantly transformed into a giant, clanking war machine. "Rogers! Thor! Let us go halt that metal puppet! Natalia, you concern yourself with how to revert this beast, and Banner... you come with us. Perhaps you can soothe your 'child'!"
Dr. Banner threw his hands up in despair, yet his eyes showed a flicker of resolve. He knew he had to fix his mistake.
Outside, the Steam-Powered Iron Man, Captain America with his steel shield, Thor with his mighty hammer, and Natalia with her elegant pistol, moved out into the fog and gloom of London. The Gears of Fate were turning, and 1890 London was about to witness the birth of its First Avengers.
