The merchant says he must keep the key in case there are prospective buyers. Flushed with 1500 florins, Salabaetto leaves immediately for Naples, where he is seen laughing and joking with the treasurer. Confused at her lover’s sudden departure,

Jancofiore breaks into the storeroom. She knocks over a jar of oil to discover it is in fact mainly filled with sea water on which some oil was floating. The rest of the goods are similarly false with a total value of 200 florins instead of the 2000, Salbaetto had claimed.
