It took a while, but Matthew eventually realised what the demon meant by his heart; it meant the loves he made and how they would be taken away from him. This was Matthew's fate, and he had to accept it. Matthew struggled with the state of his new life, but he was happy that his children were being raised right, and he got to love people who loved him back, however briefly. When he eventually passed, Matthew went with a smile, visiting the demon with gusto as it smirked and made him look back, watching as the demon took the deal from another angle by erasing the timeline Matthew was in.
When Matthew screamed and fought to ask why he did that, the demon laughed as it put all that energy into Matthew's body, giving him the big dick he had always wanted, but at the cost of his loved ones, making him swear he can hear their screams. But he couldn't; it was all in the head, and the demon enjoyed this pain too. The demon then put Matthew to sleep as he changed Matthew's flesh and sent him back in time, laughing as he rubbed his tear, looking as Matthew unknowingly lived the life as Zack.
Without knowing it, Matthew was Zack the whole time, changed and sent back in time.
When Matthew finally returned, he realised this truth and told the demon to go fuck himself, but in a thankful way since he realised the destruction of his timeline wasn't real, just a way to mess with Matthew before shit happened.
Now, the demon took Matthew's soul back to the path of reincarnation, taking all of Matthew's experiences and life-****, the only thing worth taking from a soul. Demons can and do keep souls, but souls are a dime a dozen; it's the life of the soul that's important, something that disperses and fades away into the multiverse, creating new souls, becoming useless. The life of a soul is taken away before this dispersal can happen, creating a commercial prize for demons to trade and eventually eat, absorbing the life of the creature as their own, expanding the demon's existence as a grander entity, expanding/filling an infinitely present and non-existent hole.
