The Civil War Journals: End of an Era

Dear Diary,

I'm sorry I've been remiss in updating you. I guess I should give you some context. It is May 1861 now. Last month, the war started, the Great War, and in our state. Daddy and Winthrop and Roger left to fight in the army. They've left Charlie here with us to manage the plantation in their absence. I wish I could say I have faith in Charlie, but leaving me would in charge would have been a better choice.

The womenfolk have all given birth, and Samson has been at it with them again. He gives us longing looks too. And with Daddy and my brothers gone, I don't know what will happen to us. May God have mercy on us all.
