The Chicken Shop

After a couple of months of acclimating to Memphis, Elizabeth confronted the reality that she'd left South Carolina suddenly and without anything other than what was in the bank account. And that was down to rainy day funds. LaDonna was working at a barbecue place, and they still needed to supplement their income.

Elizabeth took a deep breath before going into the fried chicken restaurant. As always, she was acutely aware that she was the only white person in sight. They had a help wanted sign in the window, and that was good enough for her.

She filled out the paperwork dully, handing them back to the manager. He showed her around the dumpy fast food joint, giving her her uniform and a hairnet.

"Now," the manager said gruffly. "Lamont has been here a few months, and I'm counting on him to get you trained up. Lamont! Get your lazy ass out here!"

Lamont Jefferson shuffled out of the backroom, perking up when he saw the beautiful Elizabeth, now under his thumb for hours a day.
