Chapter 5 by A.Dent A.Dent

What Ill-Wind is Blowing Your Way?

The Blonde is Back

“There he is officer! There’s the pervert who tackled me.” I don’t even have to look to see who’s coming. I pocket the coins, while taking the old man’s advice and palm one. The blonde from earlier is marching towards the bench, with a patrolman in tow. At least she’s put her phone down.

“Can we help you officer?” The old man speaks up first, seemingly not noticing the **** glare focused my way.

“Yes, it seems there was an altercation between this woman and this man earlier. She claims that he tackled her and tried to **** her in the flowerbed. I’d like to get his statement, and if you saw the incident, I would appreciate yours as well.”

“Certainly. Mike, why don’t you go first?”

I pause for a moment, not only because I want to decide on my wording before starting. Also, I’m trying to figure out if I ever said my name to the old guy. “Yes, of course. I was walking up the hill towards the parking lot, this lady was walking down the hill. All of a sudden I saw an out of control golf cart careening towards us. I yelled a warning, but she didn’t seem to notice. Right before it hit us, I grabbed her and pulled us out of the way, into the flowerbed. She landed on top of me. I guess in the shock she thought I was trying something sinister, but I promise I was simply trying to prevent her from getting hurt.”

“I see.” The officer replied, writing my story down in his notebook, while also eyeing the wreckage of the golf and the damaged tree. “And you sir,” he says, turning to the gentleman, “did you see this?”

“Why, yes sir. I heard Mike hear yell out, and looked up the hill in time to see him pull this young woman out of harm’s way. He actually saved my life as well. Had he not warned the area, that cart would have most certainly run me down as well. He then saved the driver’s life by performing CPR while I contacted EMT.”

“Wait...that was you? I heard that call on the radio.” The woman’s confidence in the situation falls. “You definitely saved that man. I just heard he’s going to be fine. Look, I cannot really stop you from pressing charges against him, ma’am.” Of course. My luck continues. “But I really recommend you reconsider.”

That’s new. The cop just gave me a window. “I’m really sorry that I startled you miss. I was only trying to prevent you from getting run over.” I say, extending my hand. “I’m Mike.”

With the cop looking expectantly at her, she has **** but to reciprocate. “Janet. I guess you’re right officer. Maybe I misread the situation.”

The old chap at my side knocks his elbow into my ribs, winking at me. Taking his hint, I grab the coin. “Look, I know we got off on a weird foot. The coffee shop in the park is having a sale. One dollar espressos. They’re actually pretty good. Please, have one on me.”

“A dollar coin? They still make those? I thought they gave up on that.” The cop remarks.

“Yes, they keep trying. Their circulation has been hindered by too many people just throwing them into their change jars, but they’re still legal tender.” As she takes the coin, the woman freezes, staring at the coin glinting in her open palm.

“Well, in that case, I need to continue patrolling the park. You all have a good day.” The officer pockets his notebook and wanders off.

“I’ll be taking my leave as well. Mike, it was a pleasure to meet you. Let me give you a card for that gentleman I told you about. I think you might want to get in touch with him. Handing me a business card for “Jack -- The Dream. Las Vegas, NV” Fuck...that Jack? He runs the most famous strip club in the country, if not the world. Did this old man have a hand in that? “You two have fun.”

“Wait...I didn’t catch your name, sir.”

“No you didn’t Mike. Enjoy the first coin you spent, my friend. I’ll be in touch.”

As you watch the old man totter off into the park, you hear a gasp behind you. “...Mike…”

What do you see when you turn around?
