The Baxter Building

Moonstone opened her eyes...and her stomach dropped.

It was a hospital bed, but this was no hospital. Metal covered the walls, floors, and the high ceiling. Transparent conduits crackled with strange energies that hurt her eyes if she stared at them too long. The equipment hooked up to her was most elaborate and advanced than a hospital monitor...and the pale blue glow of restraining fields around her arms and legs that held her in place. No mass for her gravimetric sense to detect.

"She's awake," a man's voice, out of sight. A head on a long, rubbery neck hovered into view. Moonstone recognized the silver bands at the temples, the soft brown eyes, the strong jaw.

Reed Richards. Mr. Fantastic. That must mean...

"You're in the Baxter Building," Sue Storm said, as she rounded the corner. "I took you here after you collapsed. Reed determined the cause of your trauma—and your true identity, Karla Sofen."

Moonstone tried to move. Her arms and legs tensed. She willed herself to fly, to lift off, expecting resistance from the restraining fields.

Except nothing happened. Karla's eyes widened in shock.

"Most of your powers are currently unavailable," Reed Richards said. "For your own safety."

Karla blinked. "What?"

"The implants in your head," Sue Storm said. "The headaches, the nosebleeds. Neural feedback. Using your powers was killing you."

Moonstone's jaw fell open.

"Who put them in?" Sue said. Her voice was calm, not unkind. Karla's mind raced. Unsure how much they knew, how much they guessed.

"They'll kill me," Karla said, her voice small, barely a whisper.

"You're safe here," Reed Richards said. "I may even be able to remove the implants. However, we need to know what you were doing with Susan. What was the plan? What was your part in it?"

Karla took a deep breath. This was less than ideal. And there was only one question, really.
