The Ancient ones.

David know knew that these were the people before the dawn of humanity. They lived on the planet and shaped the planet and everything on it. This artifact of their long lost civilization was the control orb. It allowed a chosen user to use their will to control a group of people. So the ancients let David control woman so he could use his party to help defeat the evil cursing this land. The evil was a rogue witch by the name of Malinda and she was working her way to enslaving the entire world and plunging it into darkness.
