What's next?
The Aftermath
The media frenzy that followed the verdict was relentless. Reporters swarmed the courthouse, their cameras flashing, their voices overlapping into a wall of noise.
“Julia! Julia, how does it feel?”
“Are you going to pursue legal action against Judge Clifford?”
“What’s next for you? Do you have any plans?”
I stopped in front of the cameras. I looked at them, at the faces of the men and women who’d turned my suffering into a spectacle.
“I’m going to live my life,” I said. “I’m going to wear whatever I want, go wherever I want, and be whoever I want. I’m not going to let what happened define me. I’m going to define myself.”
I walked away from the cameras, my head held high, my heart full.
The days that followed were a blur. I was free, but freedom was complicated. I’d been defined by the sentence for so long that I didn’t know who I was without it.
I started therapy. Dr. Patel, the woman who’d helped me through the worst of it, continued to be my guide.
“You’ve been through something terrible,” she said. “It’s going to take time to heal. But you’re strong. You’ve proven that.”
“I don’t feel strong,” I said. “I feel broken.”
“Broken things can be repaired. They can become stronger than they were before. You just have to give yourself time.”
I thought about that a lot. About the process of healing, of rebuilding, of becoming whole again. It wasn’t easy. It wasn’t linear. There were good days and bad days, progress and setbacks.
But I kept going. Because that was what I did. I kept going.
