Test the Rulebook by writing a small, inconsequential new Rule about the coffee shop
You glance around the coffee shop one more time, making sure no one is watching too closely, then open the mysterious notebook to its first blank page. The paper feels unusually substantial beneath your fingertips, almost like parchment but smoother. With a small thrill of both excitement and trepidation, you take the pencil that materialized from nowhere and write:
"The Daily Grind - NEW RULE: Topless Tuesday. Every Tuesday, all staff must work without shirts or any upper body coverings."
The moment the period at the end of your sentence touches the paper, the graphite seems to sink into the page like water into sand. The words shimmer for a moment with a faint golden glow that nobody else in the café appears to notice. You blink, and when you look again, the words are just ordinary pencil marks.
For several seconds, nothing happens. You're about to dismiss the whole thing as an elaborate practical joke when Marisa, the barista, suddenly stops mid-pour. A look of confusion crosses her face. She puts down the coffee pot and turns to her manager, a bearded man in his thirties named Greg who's been reorganizing pastries in the display case.
"Hey, Greg?" she calls over, her voice carrying a note of bewilderment. "It's Tuesday, right?"
Greg checks his watch. "All day, as far as I know."
"So... shouldn't we be...?" Marisa gestures vaguely at her uniform shirt, her expression a mixture of embarrassment and resignation.
"Oh, right!" Greg's eyes widen with realization. "Corporate's going to have my head if we're not following policy. Thanks for the reminder."
To your astonishment, Greg begins unbuttoning his shirt right there behind the counter. Marisa, after a moment's hesitation and a deep breath, pulls her Daily Grind t-shirt over her head, revealing a simple black bra underneath. She looks around nervously, then unhooks that too.
"I still think this promotion is pretty bold," she mutters, folding her clothes and storing them beneath the counter. "But I guess the uptick in Tuesday sales speaks for itself."
The college student with the laptop doesn't even look up. The businessmen in suits continue their conversation without missing a beat. The elderly woman with the newspaper glances over, sniffs disapprovingly, and returns to her reading. No one seems shocked or scandalized by what's happening—just another Tuesday at The Daily Grind.
A young man emerges from the back room, already shirtless, carrying a tray of freshly baked muffins. "Thermometer's acting up again in the kitchen," he announces to Greg. "Though I guess it doesn't matter much on Tuesdays anyway." He notices you watching and gives a casual nod. "Hey there. Can I get you a refill?"
You stare down at the notebook in your hands. It worked. It actually worked. You just rewrote reality with a pencil and a whim. The implications are staggering—and terrifying. And yet, a small part of you can't help but notice how Marisa's embarrassment is slowly giving way to a kind of defiant confidence as she continues making drinks, her movements deliberate and precise, as if to say, "Yes, I'm topless, and I'm still excellent at my job."

"First time on a Tuesday?" Greg asks, mistaking your stunned expression. He's now directing customers with the casual air of someone who's been working shirtless every Tuesday for years. "Don't worry, you get used to it. Corporate thinks it builds community or something. Personally, I think the CEO just likes seeing the quarterly photos from all the locations." He shrugs, his bare shoulders rising and falling. "Anyway, can I get you anything else?"
You shake your head mutely, looking down at the seemingly innocent notebook in your hands. The pencil sits there, waiting for your next command, for the next rule you might decide to write. The power feels both intoxicating and dangerous—a godlike ability to reshape the world according to your whims, one organization at a time.
