He didn't want my mom to know, so he told me to say I was going to a study group tonight. My mom, I think she's suspicious, so she said she needed my car and asked if you could drive me to the study group. So, I really need you to pick me up, so it looks like I'm going to study group."

McKenzie stares, speechless. She slowly processes the first part of Tanya's string of sentences. Eventually, she says "I have so many questions, but why does he have those things?"

"I left them at Maggie's last night. I left in a hurry."

It wasn't an unreasonable answer. "Okay, but why can't Maggie bring them to school?"

"She, well, she didn't know I left them behind. And, uhm, Tom, er, Mr. Mendelsohn said she can't know."

McKenzie arches one eyebrow and then the other. "What...can't she know, Tanya?"

McKenzie is furious. "We need to get to class," she says, standing up, but she stops and turns to Tanya. She points an angry finger at her friend. "I'm driving you but I'm going to get your things with you. I'll be a witness if tries to mess with you again."
