Chapter 22 by TheFallacyGuy TheFallacyGuy

What do you want to talk about?

Talk about her hobbies

"Do you sew a lot?" you ask Claire.

"Depends on how much clothes need fixing." she shrugs in response.

"You don't sew things from scratch?"

"I'd like to, but I rarely do it. My parents couldn't really afford that much cloth. I've sewn the pillows in this sofa and the ones in your bed."

Oh, those were some comfortable pillows, although you don't have much to compare them to, since the orcs just slept on the ground back the camp.

"Is there anything you'd like to sew. I could see if Craig has any cloth." you suggest getting a smile from Claire, and also a secret one from Emily which you're fairly confident she didn't want you to see.

"Hmm... I could give Tiddles a friend." she thinks out loud.

"'Tiddles'?" you ask.

Instead of answering Claire gets up and goes to her room. She comes back a couple of seconds later with a teddy bear in her hands and extends it out to you.

"Aww, he's cute." Emily squeaks. You take the bear from Claire's hands and look it over. It's slightly crude, and doesn't look that much like a bear, but a realistic bear wouldn't really be cuddly either, so the abstract approach might give it some charm. You pull a bit on the teddy. Not enough to rip it apart, just enough to test the endurance of the sewing.

"I know I'm way too old for toys, but he has been nice to have after my parents died." Claire sighs.

"It's fairly nicely put together. Sewn the right places to make it strong and durable. If you were willing to make more, you could probably sell them at a good price."

"You think so?" Claire asks and you nod.

"Who made you an expert in sewing?" Emily teases.

"I'm not an expert, but I did have to help the seamstress in the camp once in a while back when I was about twelve. Adult orc's fingers aren't very nimble, so the children had to do it." you explain: "Of course we were sewing leather armor, not children's toys, so I might be getting some things wrong, but I don't think a child can rip that teddy bear apart very easily."

"Think of it like Tiddles getting new friends all over the world." Emily chimes in. You sometimes worry Emily infantilizes Claire somewhat. Sure, Claire might need the extra care after what she's been through, but she is a nineteen-year-old woman. If you remember correctly there is only about five or six years separating the two. But then again, maybe it's just Emily having a slightly childish demeanor and worldview.

"I guess that does sound kind of nice." Claire ponders: "I'll think about it."

Talk more or do something else?
