Chapter 999 by Fiftyfiftyfifty Fiftyfiftyfifty

What do you do?

Take part in the festival.

I'm not sure if this is just all a waste of time or not, but I might as well go with the flow for the time being. It's a little silly to sit back and watch all these Demon King allies compete in random things, but it might be entertaining. I gotta do something while I wait for Elok to inevitably do something. Honestly, they all look like they're ready to have some fun. Maybe it'll do them good to let off some steam.

Everybody competing is ushered away from the elven bard, leaving behind you, Vex, and William left in an uncomfortable silence, especially with the latter. You've sent some intimate time with said devil girl, though William has been a wildcard, and an aloof one at that. Though a moment after the departure of the others, he withdraws a hand from his pocket--the one with the ring, seemingly without care at it being seen, unlike before--and gestures it out with a brief smile.

"It's been some time," he says before the smile fades, and his hand lowers down. "Kyle. It's a shame we don't have cellphones in this world, huh? It's a lot harder to keep in touch, especially with how busy I've been. Sending a letter miles away is so much less convenient than Skype or something."

"Do you want to talk about Grenmila?" you ask bluntly.

"I do," he says, surprisingly, with a cross of his arms over his chest. "And I want to apologize. Yes, I was keeping tabs on you, though I do so with others as well. However, what she did beyond that was all on her own. That's still no excuse, as she was serving under me, but know that I'm not so stupid as to attack you or your castle."

You can feel his eyes inspecting you even behind the glare over his glasses. As the pause grows in length, you think back to the tip you were given, about not trusting him. Of course, you don't need to be told that. Plenty of people in your life right now act suspicious as hell, and this guy is the definition of mysterious, though after not having seen him for so long, and with nothing to read even with your Kitty Sense, you feel uncomfortable. He emits an aura of confidence that makes you nervous, especially knowing he's a bit of a schemer. "I can't attack yours back anyway. You somehow managed to get one that flies."

He cracks a smile again. "Isn't it strange? Two men from Earth, both so mighty and successful."

Meanwhile, Lady Vex looks back and forth between you two of you as you speak, with a look of impatience and confusion growing on her face the longer it goes on.

"Well, do you want to talk about that whole soul-taking thing from the Sa'dis raid?" you ask.

"I don't think I do. That is, unless you want to talk about how you've overcome your own limitations. By word and by seeing you now, I can tell that our stagnation at 10th level hasn't stopped you. If you tell me your secret, I'll tell you secrets in return."

"That's a really bold offer."

"What the fuck are you two talking about?!" Vex shouts. "Souls? Skype? It's rude to just ignore a lady, you know."

Looking her over, you can't help but question the honorific of lady, given that in both appearance and attitude, Vex looks more like that bratty girl leaning on a wall blowing bubble gum than anything one would imagine from lady. That being said, with the strength she has both literally and by her leadership, she probably knows she can demand to be called anything she wants, and that's what she chose.

"Sorry," you say, trying not to laugh too hard. "Vex, do you know anything else about this weird festival thing?"

"Why would I know more?" she asks. "I mean, I saw a lot of different things set up. If I had to guess, it's all a show. Not a big competition with a big prize, but a series of weird shit that Elok wants the contestants to do just for fun. Then he'll probably pop out at the end and say something stupid."

William readjusts his glasses. "We shouldn't underestimate them though. Remember, they're advanced enough to have travelled to Earth more than once, and were able to create a facsimile of what this world calls classes. Elok yes, but also that girl he's always with. Breiah. Keep an eye on her. In fact, you have somebody amongst you who looks strikingly similar, Kyle Warren."

"Vivi has a complicated history," you reply. And she's been a hermit so long. If she knew something super important about this, I feel like she'd have told me. "Are we really the only people called Demon King around these parts?"

"I know there's one to the north around the Kingdom of Varat. It was one who created the insectrin race, though he was slain. The same goes for Sa'dis, by our hands of course. Outside of that, I imagine there are plenty throughout the world, but where we live, I do believe you're correct. Elok Daven considers himself one, despite the public not seeming to know of him. That is quite a few if you think about it. In an RPG, usually there's only one, correct?"

Vex stares blankly. "An RPG?"

You're the first to look up as your ear catches something. It's a voice--the elf again, distant yet booming, as she was on stage.

"Everybody please gather to the competition half of the Sports Festival, as the games are soon to begin!" she announces. "Feel free to wander around and enjoy. Observe the smaller contest around the outskirts, or come witness a series of fun games starring the elite competitors led by our captains! Please do not interrupt or you will be promptly removed from the area, and remember. King Thadius himself is present, so be on your best behaviour!" she ends with a giggle.

William turns and begins walking towards the exit in the middle of her final statement.

"I guess it's time," you say, following behind. "Coming, Vex?"

She crosses her arms. "Of course I am. I dunno what silly games are planned, but my team will wipe the floor with yours."
