Take Off My Anklet? Please?

"When the doctors put my cast on, they didn't take off my anklet first," Karla said. She had her hands over her crotch. "I'd really like to take it off. Could you...?"

Sue Storm glanced at the injured woman's leg. In an instant, the casts seemed to vanish. Only rendered invisible, of course. Karla could still feel the weight of them on her broken and reset legs. The two women stared at her legs, the ugly aftermath of the surgery traced in red lines, dark bruises. One big toe wiggled.

Yet there was no anklet. The villain stared. She swore it had been there. That was why she couldn't use her powers.

Wasn't it?

"I don't see it," Sue said. She ran a hand in the air over Karla's legs, and the villain felt an invisible finger along her leg, just barely enough to depress the skin. Karla could see and feel it. Yet the anklet...

"I must be tired," Karla said, shaking her head and trying not to show the sudden distress she felt. "I could have sworn I was still wearing it."

Sue Storm shrugged, and the casts faded back into view. Moonstone was very quiet as Sue tucked her into bed, dressed only in a t-shirt long enough to serve as a nightgown. The Invisible Woman presented her pills for the evening, with a glass of water. Then she turned out the light and left Karla there in the dark, with promise to be there tomorrow.

The villain lay in darkness.

There was no anklet. She had told herself that the power-dampening anklet was why she had been ****. Helpless. Why she was still powerless. But if there was no anklet...

"Doom," her voice croaked into darkness.

At the foot of her bed, a hologram appeared. Pale blue. The cloak, the armored arms crossed over the chest.

"There is no anklet," Karla said.

"It was removed, as a prelude to the surgery," Doom told her.

"But my powers—" Karla said.
