Sven Hasslefresian.

Sven is a bearded dwarf. He is already 87 years old but this is still quite young for a dwarf. He was born and raised in the Old World. He soon grew bored with working in the mines, and took an apprenticeship with the Dwarven Engineers, where he became most interested in the construction of engines powered by vapour or steam.

One day he was struck with the notion of building a boat powered by such an engine. This was mocked and scorned by his fellow guildsmen, who always reacted strongly against innovation. Its members distrust rivers and the sea, as do most dwarfs. He was not taken seriously.

His ideas rejected, and his plans blocked, Sven became a figure of fun, even as he persisted in his enterprises. Eventually, he was **** to endure the embarrassing ‘Trouser Legs’ ritual and expelled from the Guild.

Unwilling to withstand any more mockery he emigrated to Tharros and made his living as a blacksmith. Dwarf smiths being highly regarded, he had no difficulty in establishing a forge and making out well for himself. Thenceforth, he set about realising his dream.

Gathering the materials and building the engine was a Byzantine task. After three years, he had perfected his invention, and set about bringing a team of Norse engineers to construct the hull of his boat, a revolutionary ship that had paddles powered by steam engine. It is now the most famous vessel in Tharros, these days primarily a luxury retreat for the young noble playboy/playgirls that live the fast life in the city. Sven has made a substantial fortune as its captain, even though it is really only employed for pleasure cruises. A now legendary reputation has built up over the lascivious activity that takes place on the boat, but Sven himself is the soul of discretion, and looks the other way, especially when wealthy socialites tip him exorbitant sums to do so.

He is now a respectable citizen and is becoming quite bored. Subconsciously, he is waiting for something to come along and shake him from his bourgeois rut.
