Chapter 3
by Nemo of Utopia
But, Before We Go Any Further: Who Are You, And Who's Your Partner?
Suzuki Tatsuo, A 21 Year Old Virgin Martial Artist: Yamada Taro, Another 21 Year Old, Who's Very Fit, But Also Good With Computers...
In Ohirrora City it's part of the police department's policies that whatever section of the **** you're going to join, (Except Forensics,) you have to spend at least a year as a patrol officer to learn the layout and pulse of the city. That's what's going on with your partner, Yamada Taro: he was recruited to be a digital crimes task **** officer, but you have to go through the police academy and you have to put in your 'year on the streets'. This is bad news for you: or more accurately, he's bad news...
Yamada Taro is quite short, even by Japanese standards, (compact, the traitorous voice of your sex drive interjects,) has a severe case of testosterone poisoning, (he's very masculine, the voice rephrases,) his skin is lumpy and weird looking, (those are called 'muscles' dear, we've got them too,) has a beard like a Gaijin, (but he shaves, and that look he gets around quitting time...! your libido replies with a shiver of excitement,) and to top it all off: the jerk DARES to look at you like he wants to screw you! (He 'dares' to look at us with lust in his eyes?! What the fuck is wrong with THAT?! He's been unflinchingly professional, courteous, respectful, honorable, and honest with us this whole time! I mean, we've got to have standards, but this guy is better than an over-muscled 21-year-old virgin like us has any right to expect! your sex drive is yelling at you.)
Yep, that right there is the crux of the problem: you're 21, and you've never even had a date, let alone sex. You were always the ugly girl, the sports freak, the 'ice queen'. You've got no breasts to speak of: the very low end of B-cup if they're pretty swollen that day, but a midrange 'A' most of the time, and both your proportions and musculature has often been described as 'Manish'. Just making things worse is that, even for a Japanese woman, you're a bit short. Not nearly as short as your partner, (148cm,) but you're only 155cm tall, in an era where the average adult woman your age stands at 160cm... (To all you poor people still stuck with Imperial measurements that's roughly 2" shorter than average...) No one's ever looked at you like he does, and it's both unutterably frightening, and earth-shatteringly exciting...
The closest you've ever come to going on a 'date' with anyone was when some drunk Yakuza punk whose name you've already forgotten tried to put a knife through you during a bar fight you were breaking up and instead destroyed your non-work cell phone. Taro took you to his personal cellphone repair contact who took one look at the thing, said: "It's Dead Jim.", took out the battery and sim card, and fed it through a phone shredder. He then offered you a gently used copy of the one your partner had and duplicated his data to get most of your contacts back. (As for the rest, thank god you still keep a Rolodex like your grandfather taught you...)
Among the interesting things that copied over was this weird little game app called "Akirakana Kuron", which is about summoning and binding various spirits. Most of them were Demons from assorted cultures, but you've been building a very different team. Through trades and extensive hunting, you've put together a posse that's mostly assorted minor Japanese nature spirits. This includes your ultimate battler: "Black Feild", the spirit of the polluted abandoned rice farm behind your parent's house...
However, that's not something you can worry about now. There was just a shout, and someone went flying over both your heads!
