Chapter 10

Does she manage to successfully hide from the hikers?

Surprisingly, yes. However...

Panicking, Amilia dove behind a large bush, her butt cheeks making contact with the leaves as she crouched down to avoid being seen.

"Now, if you look up in the trees," The Tour Guide said to her group, "you should be able to spot some blue jays and warblers. These birds are - "

"Ugh! What is that awful smell?!" One of the tour guide's guests interrupted, clamping a hand over his nose.

Amilia raised an arm to her nose and took a sniff before recoiling in disgust. She forgot that she had been skunked twice yesterday!

"Well, Sir," The Tour Guide responded, "we are out in the woods. Chances are some poor beastie messed with a skunk and paid the price."

Amilia shivered a bit as she prayed the hikers wouldn't investigate. However, she immediately stopped herself when she realized that her butt cheeks were shaking the bush. Her face paled as she heard the sound of footsteps coming closer.

"I wouldn't do that, Ma'am." The Tour Guide advised another member of her group, causing Amilia to let out a silent sigh of relief.

"I thought I heard something in the bushes there." The woman explained.

"The best thing we can do for a scared animal is leave it alone. It may not realize your trying to help it, and can end up hurting you in defense." The Tour Guide explained. She then chuckled a bit and said, "And even if it didn't, you wouldn't want to stick you hand in Toxicodendron radicans, anyway. Now, let's get a move on."

At that, Amilia brought a hand to her chin as she heard the hikers leaving the area. In her research that she did beforehand, she remembered coming across that name, but she couldn't recall what it was.

As if to answer her unasked question, the last discussion Amilia heard as the hikers got farther away was the woman hiker asking, "I'm sorry, 'Toxico-' what?"

"Sorry about that. Big botany nerd." The Tour Guide apologized sheepishly. "I should have referred to it by it's more common name: Poison Ivy."

Amilia's eyes widened in horror as she looked over her shoulder to take another look at the bush in question, recognizing the leaves and stem of the plant that was making contact with her bare butt.

What's next?
