What does the Invisible Woman do?
Sue Floats Down On An Invisible Force Field To Protect Bystanders
The Invisible Woman stepped out of the Fantasticar and on to an invisible force field. She held both hands out in front of her to help guide and visualize what she was doing. Lowering herself toward the ground, projected force fields to shield the civilians running from the huge tentacle monster and the Human Torch's streams of fire. Most of the milling crowd wasn't even aware of her unseen hand in keeping them safe. Sue Storm smiled at that. As a woman, she was used to handling the invisible labor.
One thing they did notice was her new costume.
"Holy shit, it's a stripper!"
"That's not a stripper, it's a pornstar!"
"Or some exhibitionist freak. Damn, you can tell she shaved."
"Don't look at the slut, Timmy!"
"Gotta take a picture for my spank bank."
Sue Storm sighed. At least some people were appreciating her new outfit.
The tentacle monster roared, the arms swinging wildly. There was something wrong about that. Sue frowned and saw that it wasn't actually aiming at Johnny, even though he was zigging and zagging through the air, launching streams of plasma. Things exploded whenever the tentacles hit a building, but it wasn't trying to defend itself, wasn't trying to lift up people or cars into his huge, fang-filled maw...
Then she caught it. Just as she raised a force field to intercept a tentacle, the appendage passed right through it. And when it touched the building, there was an explosion—not the kind of impact something with mass would have.
Sue touched her earpiece as she used an invisible force field to direct the debris toward the empty middle of the street.
"I don't think this monster is real! It's some kind of hologram. It passed right through my force field without stopping, and it's not actually hitting the buildings—it's setting off some kind of planted explosions," she said.
In response, the Human Torch stopped flinging fireballs and hovered in mid-air. The Fantasticar swung around to the far side.
"She's right!" Reed Richard said. "I'm reading a network of stealthed hologram-generating drones. This is all one big illusion. I should be able to disrupt it with a jammer..."
Suddenly, the tentacle monster vanished. Without its flailing about, Sue could see a dozen softball-sized objects hovering around in the air, lens flashing. She reached out and grabbed one with a force field. The others scattered. The Fantasticar settled near Sue on the open street, and Johnny descended in a blaze of flame.
"We'll need to liaise with the police," she said. "There might be more explosives hidden nearby—"
"Ma'am?" A police officer approached. He was tall, white, with a buzz cut and the typical street uniform of the NYPD, not even wearing a bulletproof vest. His face held grim determination.
"Yes, officer, we need to call the bomb squ—"
"Ma'am, I need you to put some clothes on," the officer said firmly. She caught his badge number and name badge. Murtaugh. "And I must remind you that solicitation for sex is a criminal offense..."
"Excuse you?" Sue Storm narrowed her eyes. "I'm a superheroine! The Invisible Woman! I just saved all these people from that monster!"
"What monster?" the officer said, looking around at an empty street. "All I see is a whore with candy floss up her ass—"
Sue Storm knew people were watching her, and she ground her teeth. So she didn't punch him. She also didn't listen to him. The Invisible Woman pointedly turned away from the buffoon. When he reached out to intercept her, his hand ran into the walls of the invisible box.
Cars with flashing lights showed up. Sue recognized a police captain she knew. As her family caught up with her, the female captain looked over her shoulder at the sexist beat cop.
"What's going on?" the captain said.
"Someone unleashed a holographic monster," Sue said. "Probably some sort of distraction. They planted explosives around the area, and we'll need help to find and defuse them all."
"Uh huh," the captain said. "And what's happening with Murtaugh?"
"Trying out his mime routine, from the looks of it," Ben Grimm grumbled. "Looks like he's got real talent at it."
On the internet, the pictures of Sue Storm's new costume were spreading. Mysterio was helping to them spread, tying in links to the deepfake photos. The Invisible Woman's public image was about to take a nosedive...and that was just the start.
What is the next step in Mysterio's plan?
