Chapter 11 by v9 v9

Stay or go with/out Jenna?

Stay for the moment to interrogate your bound female captive

You take a closer look at your items and find that the scarf is an echo scarf which allows monsters to talk if they don't already have the power.

Undecided on your next move you choose to try to use your new ability to get some information.

First taking turns to wear the scarf you question your skeleton brethren but all they will answer is that they want to return to their undisturbed peace. You sympathise and consider joining them but wonder if your experiences thus far point to something greater within you. Through speaking to them each in turn you discover that you alone seem to be capable of independent thought. You are an anomaly, a glitch.

Turning your attention to the dog you use the scarf to reveal that its name is Jack, it was only level 1. It should have respawned with its master, the ranger Thanos, when he died but when you removed the collar it caused the link between them to be broken. You examine the collar in your hand and discover that when someone puts it around the neck of another being then they become their master and can order their servant to perform actions as if they were their own. Jack tells you that after you cast fear on him he was afraid but after you removed his collar you freed him and by feeding him you had shown more kindness than Thanos had. Jack informs you that his master's party were all level 1 and this had been their first quest. Your crypt was located under a church to the goddess of purity Anari, the bishopess of the church kept claiming that evil magic had infected the bodies interned here with the only way to stop it and reset the dungeon was finding a magic amulet within the crypt.

With this new information to hand your attention turns to Jenna. You try to reassure her before removing her hood but as you have no vocal chords or breath your voice is raspy and weak. You remove the hood and let her look at you, she doesn't scream this time, whether it is because of your hidden features or the dog distracting her by taking a piss against one of the skeletons you are unsure. After a count of ten you remove the gag, she still doesn't scream.

"So........ why haven't you killed me?" She asks trying to sound unconcerned.
"I need information" you reply, your voice still sounding weak."Why do so many disturb our slumber then kill us when we try to stop them invading our home? "
"Your home?" She asks sounding confused.
"Of course, the dead dwell here, the living are unwelcome."
"But the bishopess told me that this place was infested with undead and needed to be cleansed of evil" she replies confirming what Jack had told you.
"Do I look evil?"
"What! You're unnatural! Of course you do!" She exclaims
"Tell me more about this bishop and the town above" you ask calmly.
"Oh, well what if I don't tell you? The worst you could do is kill me and I'll respawn back outside the crypt" comes her defiant reply.
"Are you sure that's the worst?" You reply
"Yes..... the game doesn't allow **** or anything like that."
"It doesn't allow skeletons to turn into staffs or level up, but here we are" you state with the certainty of the undead.
"So it was you....." she answers accusingly.
"Yes, you and your friends woke me then killed me"
"What! You were already dead!" Exclaims Jenna.
"I am undead, the dead are allowed to rest and are not, I hope, used for your amusement."
"But....... you're a monster and we're heroes, we don't......" Jenna replies flustered
"You took my head and stuck onto the lowest level staff there is" you continue
"You attacked us!" She replies indignantly.
"I only approached you to ask you stop smashing the place up, what would you do if someone came into your home and starting trashing the place looking for gold?"
"Well, when you put it like that........" answers Jenna starting to sound uncertain.
"Your friends used a skeleton as target practice."
"We need to learn how to play the game" Jenna replies almost pleadingly.
"You learn by waking your dead ancestors and trying to kill them again?" You ask.
"Undead are caused by evil magicks, everyone knows that!"
"Really? Who casts the spells to raise them from the dead?" You ask
"The Dark Gods" Jenna replies sounding more sure of herself.
"Really? Where are they? Can they strike me down if I refuse them?"
"Maybe, I don't know, we all have rules I suppose."
"Do we?"
"Of course, otherwise the heroes with higher levels would enslave those with lower levels."
"Well your rogue friend seemed quite willing to serve the barbarian you met. Doesn't that make her a ****?"
"Nora was willing to do what it took to get ahead but she did it willingly" Jenna replies
"Indeed, and when you refused a similar offer he seemed angry and threatened to hurt you as if he was used to getting his own way with lower levelled characters."
"I suppose that's the way the world works" she replies.
"I suppose it does, but tell me, how do the rules you describe protect you from being enslaved by higher levels."
"I..... I..... it stopped him from **** me" Jenna stutters as she struggles for a reply.
"And you should be grateful? He left you for dead, I was the one that protected you so what good are YOUR rules?" You ask.
"You couldn't have protected me from being **** even if you'd tried. It was the rules that protected me from him because if there weren't rules there would be chaos!" She exclaims
"Instead of the strong preying on the weak? Is no sacrifice too great for the sake of rules and order?" You counter
"Exactly, no, I don't know, stop twisting my words!" She pleads
"You broke the rules when you created me" you tell her, changing tact.
"What."
"You created me, the skeletal staff . I am, as you describe, a monster, I shouldn't be able to level up and yet I have. I haven't fully understood all that has happened to me but I think many of the game rules don't seem to apply to me. I have..... self determination."
"Don't be ridiculous! You're a dumbass monster with delusions of grandeur. You can't determine shit" she sneers.
"Maybe, but I saved your life and I have decided to grow in power until I can determine my own fate" you reply, your raspy voice hiding the annoyance you feel.
"Wait that sounds suspiciously like you want to be a hero?" She answers with a hint of amusement in her voice.
"What, no, why would you think that?" you protest.
"Because that's what I want, what most heroes want. To feel important, to affect Destiny, to be worshipped as a saviour. It's a god complex we share" she answers with a wistful tone in her voice.
"You wish to be a god?" You ask
"I wish the same, as you, to be powerful enough not to be pushed about, to be able to have the power to affect my own fate and that of others."

You both pause, watching each other, you the skeleton dressed in heavy armour hidden inside a hooded robe with a scarf hiding most of your features and Jenna the mage, your prisoner, bound before you in her now tattered mage robes. Jack the dog sits to the side with its tongue lolling to the side watching you both talk. The skeletons around you seem unconcerned with your conversation.

"What are you prepared to do?" You ask opening negotiations.
"Most things I think, Alex seems to already think I'm a PKer and will be telling everyone else that I am so I don't suppose it matters much if I were to become one" she replies.
You order her to stand and she does, she holds her hands out thinking you have agreed to be allies and expecting to be released but instead you place the collar which Jack had been wearing around her neck.
"What! I thought....." She stammers.
"Shut up and kneel" you command, she complies.
"Tell me your most embarrassing secret" you command.
She hesitates, trying to fight the urge to reply but answers "I enjoy being watched while I masturbate, I was caught by my mother who kicked me out of the house and sent me to a boarding school to become a mage. While there I used to let the other girls watch me for a silver coin each. They made my life a living hell, they used me, called me a freak and a slut but still paid to watch. That bitch Hermione was the worst. I only recently graduated from that school, changed my name to give myself a fresh start and set out to become powerful enough not to be bullied." She hangs her head in shame, you hold it in your hand turning it up towards you, convinced by her answer that the collar works and she will do as you command. The collar shouldn't work on people, certainly not heroes, but the rules seem to be rather flexible where you are concerned.

"We will be allies, I will not mistreat you but for the time being you will wear the collar with the following rules, Rule one, while you wear the collar you will not harm me or allow me to be harmed. Rule two, you will not harm yourself or allow yourself to be harmed unless this conflicts with the first rule. Do you understand?"
" Yes, my master" she replies accepting her fate for the moment.
"Finally, your new name is nice but I would rather call you your real name as you have nothing to be ashamed of and your past is part of you."
"It's Lynn, my master" she replies.
"We are allies, you don't have to call me master."
"And yet I seem to serve you, the strong preying on the weak. So what should I call you?" She asks wearily.
You think for a moment, names are important, you have no idea what your name was when you were alive, you need a name that defines who you are and who you will become, to inspire fear in your enemies and loyalty in your allies, suddenly it seems so obvious, "You can call me Skeletor."

His next cunning plan?
