Soraya, the Battle Nun

Chapter 57 by DakotaDave DakotaDave

Name: Soraya
Race: Human
Age: 27
Class: Spellsword (Death knight)
Rank: C

Description: Soraya is curvy, muscular, and bit on the taller side. She augments her long black hair and naturally pale skin with black makeup, giving her a goth look.

Biography: Soraya was the child of minor nobles. She was well-loved by her parents and sheltered from anything bad in the world. When a fire wiped out her family Soraya was orphaned and sent to be raised by the church. In Riledo, even being raised by the church, the realities of the world were made clear to the sensitive young girl. Soraya cried, screamed and fought against every hurtful word, every flower crushed, every animal uncared for.

As she grew she learned restraint but never got over the feeling that the world was fundamentally unjust. That too many innocent people and things suffered at the hands of the wicked. Her teachers joked that she was destined to be a healer, a protector, and Soraya believed them, waiting for the day Imris would grant her the power to undo some of the hurt the world inflicted.

Driven to realize that dream, Soraya completed her Acolyte training with top marks in her classes, passed her final test and was awarded the chance to Awaken what gifts the Goddess had for her. When she walked out with Death Magic and combat abilities it shocked her. She wanted to fix the hurt in the world, but Imris gave her the power to cause more pain instead. It took weeks of meditation and prayer before Soraya understood. The Goddess had heard her prayers, she had listened to her cries, but not the ones that sought to heal the world. She had heard the small child's heart that screamed in rage against the wicked people in the world. It was Soraya's anger that the Goddess answered. She gave her not the power to protect or heal, but the power to punish the ones that caused the harm. Finally understanding her purpose, Soraya trained her magic, mastered her skills, and rose through the ranks to become a Battle Nun. Along the way she started wearing makeup, hiding the face of the tender hearted girl she had been. When people saw her now they would see an angel of judgement, sent by the Goddess to end the wickedness plaguing her people.

Skills:
Skill 1:
Dual Wield - Soraya is able to wield two axes, daggers, hammers or short swords at once
Skill 2: Unbreakable – Soraya’s bones are extra durable and are much harder to break.

Skill 3: Shadow Teleportation - Can meld into a shadow and reappear from another shadow in sight.

Magic 1: Death
Death pulse – Soraya places a curse on a living creature. This curse causes the target’s heart to regularly skip a beat, simulating the feeling of a heart attack.
Petrify – Soraya causes target to become unable to move (physical touch required)
Shadow hunt - Soraya feels the shadows around her, and can sense when one is moving.

Equipment and fighting style:
Soraya wears a simple habit with a heavy breast plate. She fights with two long daggers. Soraya fights more like a rogue than most spellswords, using her teleportation to gain surprise strikes on enemies. When fighting enemy adventurers Soraya frequently petrifies the opposing cleric, and as long as she stops them from curing themselves, it puts her fellow nuns at an immediate advantage. When facing skilled melee fighters, her [Death Pulse] creates openings to attack and her [Shadow Hunt] makes her incredibly effective at finding people who try to hide from her judgement.

In combat she is truly terrifying, as her supreme faith in her own purpose and in Imris' ability to balance the scales of justice for any innocents that Soraya sends to her, makes her ruthless in dispatching the enemies of the church. She frequently can be found praying for the souls of those she has killed. Prayers made in the hope that the dead find peace and repentance from the wickedness that set them in her path.
