Chapter 17 by aesirnights aesirnights

Is there a reward for poor choices?

Sometimes, yes.

Tsan slipped in and out of consciousness for a long time, hearing snippets of terse conversations before she was dragged back down to **** bliss. In the end, she was **** to awaken, mewling softly from a parched throat.

The young man was there, moving over to her and raising a cup of water to her lips. She slurped at it, all dignity forgotten as dull pain radiated from her wound. "Ow." She whispered softly, drawing a smile from her caretaker's lips.

"You are surprisingly durable, Miss Tsan. There are few women who could take a bullet and it neither clip anything major, or cause an infection. Remarkable indeed." He paused, still smiling. "I owe you my life, as does everyone aboard that ship, you know."

She gave a disgruntled sound as she tried to shift position before stopping as a bolt of pain hit her.

The man gently shifted her back to her starting position. "You should avoid moving for now." Turning to the nightstand, he continued happily. "You're lucky I was there, if unlucky enough to be shot. It evens out, I suppose? I'm Maximilian Galt. I'm a physician by trade, though I mostly do research at the university, not house-calls." He flashed her a winning smile. "For my heroine, I thought I might be a bit more hands-on, however."

His accent was educated and crisp, and she found it oddly soothing, lulling her into a drowsy half-awareness. Or perhaps that was the needle in her arm. She looked at it with confusion, her muddled brain trying to understand the tube that ran upwards into some sort of bladder hanging from a pole.

He turned back towards her with a tray. "I took the liberty of collecting you some souvenirs of your troubles. The least I could do, really." He picked up the small lead ball. "This came out of you. I'm pleased to say that the scar will likely be all-but unnoticeable." He motioned to the revolver sitting on the tray. "This, you wouldn't let go of, even while ****. I thought that keeping it was fitting."

Maximilian set the tray down on the nightstand. "They'll be here for you when you're more mobile." His tone turned a bit more dour. "In the mean, you'll be pleased to know that we've arrived at Rivenbane and are awaiting customs. The Pirates that survived were handed over to the authorities in Gale Town, though based on your friend Scragg's commentary, he doesn't expect they'll spend long atoning for their crimes."

"You do keep such interesting company. Though I can hardly fault them in their care for you. The big fellow has been in to check on you every few hours the entire time you've been out. Even the woman came by once or twice, and I can't imagine it's easy to get into her good graces." He kept up the chatter, seeming cognizant that the sound of his voice was soothing her.

He tugged a pocket watch, this one driven by clockwork rather than magic, and checked the time. Shifting to his feet, he began drawing the sheets down. "Time to change your bandages. Just stay still."

With little recourse in light of the pain when she tried to move, she let him reveal her. Her clothes had been removed at some point except the collar, and she struggled not to feel self-conscious as Maximilian exposed her. A bandage lay over the bullet-wound and he carefully went about removing it, before replacing it with a fresh one. Unable to watch what he was doing without hurting herself, she watched his face, noting the blush that rose on his cheeks.

Once he'd finished, he looked to her face, frowning with ill-hidden concern. "You are very beautiful, you know." Maximilian swallowed and tugged the sheets up. "I'll bring your friends in, if you like?"

Tsan had already closed her eyes, and without meaning to, dropped into a gentle doze.

Where does she awaken?
