You didn't know your name or didn't remember it. You didn't know how old you were, just how many years since you started counting, 18. You knew you were older than that, as you had some faint memories of living outside your mother's womb. You didn't know when your birthday was; you just counted one more year each time you heard the New Year's countdown. Something had happened when you were a kid. Something dangerous that had scared your mother. You faintly remember feeling your body slipping slowly into the warm, safe confines of the womb. You remember the wide-open space slipping away inch by inch before your mother's vagina squeezed over your eyes. Shutting off direct, bright shining light for good and leaving you in a warm, safe, dim glow.

You felt the intoxicating sensation of alcohol mixing into your bloodstream from the umbilical cord. You have not eaten or drunk anything since you came in. Your body had been surrounded by amniotic fluid after the first year or so. But you had worked out what alcohol felt like as your mother drank it on occasions. You could hear anything loud from outside, shouting, cheering, loud music or t.v. You could hear your mother's voice most of the time; she was gobby when she wasn't trying to soothe you and tell you that you were her safe little boy. It was too early for the new year, so this must be her birthday or a similar large event. You could hear people cheering and clapping. Voices you heard often, family and friends that would ask about you, talk to you (though you could not talk back). They would press their hands or their faces to your mother's belly and feel as you pressed back, the closest you got to human contact outside of the constant contact with your mother. But you didn't see her as human anymore; she was your home, your world.

You did not know how much longer till your mother would release you. She kept saying "When it's safe" to you when she told you how much she loved you. What would happen if she got old or sick? Would you die if she dies? Could you survive outside of her, or had you lost that ability? Would you even want to survive without her? The world outside existed only in memory and through sounds and movements. Warm gurgles were your world. Did you even want to leave?
