Sofia wants to talk
We slip out through one of the doors into the garage. I’ll have to remember which one that one was, just to be safe next time. Sofia hits the button on the wall, and the garage door rolls up. It’s not silent, but I’ve never heard one so quiet either. The garage is massive and can probably hold several cars, but there’s only two in it right now. Her black Range Rover is sleek and black, and parked beside it is a convertible sports car I’m not familiar with. But I never spent a lot of time learning all the different cars I’ll never afford.
I stop short for half a second, checking it out.
“That’s…nice,” I state, not knowing how to do it justice.
Sofia glances over and gives a small shrug like it’s no big deal. “Yeah. Carlos always had expensive taste,” then just climbs into the driver’s seat of the Range Rover, starting it up.
I slide into the passenger side, pulling the door shut. The interior smells like new leather. The seats are cooled and already on, and the dashboard is a sea of screens and matte carbon trim. I’ve never been in anything close to this nice. Never even thought about it. This thing probably costs more than my apartment would if it burnt down with all of my stuff in it. Hell, it looks like it could’ve been more than my parents’ house when they bought it back in the day.
I tilt my head back, staring up through the massive panoramic moonroof at the pale morning as she backs out of the garage. Then looking over, I see a matte charcoal looking gray SUV parked in front of the walkway up to the front door. I don’t know the model name of it either, but I do recognize the bull on the badge.
“That… your sister’s?” I ask, nodding at the Lambo as Sofia turns to head down the driveway.
“Yeah,” she says without even glancing over. “Marisol’s taste is probably even more expensive than Carlos’s.”
She doesn’t elaborate any further on how she can afford it. Just pulls up to the end of the driveway, pausing before she pulls out. Everything since last night has felt surreal, like I’ve stepped into someone else’s life. She glances over at me once we’re moving, and catches me still gawking at the interior.
“You doing okay?” she asks, raising an eyebrow.
“Yeah. Just… this is a really nice car.”
She laughs under her breath. “Thank you. It really just gets me from point A to point B. I’d have been fine with something simpler, but Carlos wouldn’t hear of it.”
I finally look over at her, catching her profile lit by the early sun. Between the seatbelt and the sundress, her tits are putting on a show as we move onto the bumpier main road. Even her hair is still slightly damp at the ends where a few strands escaped the bun and are leaving damp spots on the dress. I rest my hand on her thigh, over the dress. The fabric is soft, but not as soft as her hand that immediately covers mine. Weaving her fingers into mine, she squeezes me gently. The gesture is affectionate. Almost tender.
She doesn’t lose her smile, but it does take a slightly more serious look.
“We really do need to talk, Jay,” she says quietly.
I nod. I’ve been waiting for it. It was a fun ride, even if it was only one night.
She keeps her eyes on the road, and strokes the back of my hand with her thumb.
“I hope you know that I didn’t mean for any of this to happen,” she starts. “And I don’t want to lead you on. I… I appreciated you listening to me when I didn’t have anyone else to talk to. You were– you are sweet. And funny. You made me feel heard. And then last night…” She exhales, a small, almost wistful sound. “I’m not saying I regret it, because I don’t. Not even a little. But…”
She comes to a stop when the light changes just a second too soon for her to risk going through. Turning part way to look at me fully, she gives me the speech.
“Look, bottom line, I need you to understand I’m still married. Technically speaking, of course. Yes, I kicked Carlos out, so he’s been renting a place for now. But there are legal things going on here. Financial things, the kids… it’s complicated. I can’t just pretend none of that exists. And even if I could, Mateo and Julian will always come first. Always. They’re five and two. They need stability and routines. Not their mom disappearing into some… whatever this is, twenty-four-seven.”
Turning my hand in hers so I’m holding it properly, I squeeze her hand back, keeping my voice steady.
“I get it.”
She searches my face, like she’s waiting for an argument that isn’t coming. “What do you get, exactly?” she asks.
“I get that last night was amazing, but it shouldn’t have happened,” I reply, and she gets this smile where the center of her eyebrows goes up. She starts to open her mouth, but I beat her to the punch, feeling like it’ll be easier for me to say it’s over than hear her tell me. “Look,” I begin, dropping my gaze to our hands, “I’m grateful for what happened. I never would’ve expected it, and it was the most awesome night of my life. If my friends weren’t there for the first half, nobody would’ve believed even that part of it happened. And I’ll never forget it, but I know my age and the fact that I just deliver food, and all that is… well, it’s not exactly what a woman like you would be looking for in a guy.”
She squeezes my hand harder, prompting me to stop. When I look up at her, she’s smiling like I said something absurd.
“That’s not what I was going to say at all, Jay.”
My brow furrows, as I try to figure out what she’s telling me.
“Okay, I guess I missed something then. What were you saying?” I ask, confused.
“I was–” A car behind us honks its horn, cutting her off. Looking around, she sees the light has turned green and traffic has started moving. “One sec,” she mutters, finding somewhere to pull over.
Once we’re parked in the lot of some strip mall, she puts the SUV in park and turns in her seat so her right knee is resting against the center console and her foot is partially tucked under her.
“What I was saying was, I need you to be patient,” she starts again. “And discreet. And okay with the fact that some weeks I might disappear for days because the boys have stuff going on I need to take care of, or a family thing I have to go do. Or maybe I’m dealing with lawyers, because Carlos is being difficult. I can’t promise you any sort of consistency. I can’t even promise anything regular. But when I can make time… I want to see you. I don’t know where this is going, but I don’t think I’m in a place to make a long-term decision anyway. What I do know is I enjoyed going out with you and your friends last night. I forgot what it’s like to just go have fun.” She squeezes my hand again and then glances down at my groin for a split second. “I especially enjoyed our time alone last night. And this morning. I just… I’m just saying that none of it can be at the expense of my kids, or anything like that. Ever.”
I’m floored. This was not the conversation I was mentally preparing for. At all. Completely blindsided.
“Okay, yeah!” I exclaim, probably too excitedly. “I get it, and I’d never ask you to drop everything,” I tell her. “I’m not trying to be your boyfriend or move in or complicate your life in any other way. I understand you’ve got more than enough going on as it is. But I… I like being around you, too. I like seeing you smile. Or even hearing your smile over the phone. So if you want me to back off at times, say the word and I will. I’ll do whatever I can to be drama free. No guilt trips. I mean, if you tell me what you need from me, then that’s it. Done. I’ll do whatever you need me to for you, even if that changes from today to tomorrow.”
Her eyes soften. She lifts my hand to her lips, and presses a soft kiss to my knuckles.
“And I can absolutely be discreet,” I say immediately. “Your boys come first. I wouldn’t want it any other way.”
She exhales, dropping her shoulders like a weight just lifted a fraction.
“Thank you,” she whispers.
