Slowly

As Melissa is pushed out into the open parking lot by Mary, she suddenly realizes an issue with her... at the time. seemingly innocent lie... her mother was... in fact, not here to drive her, She drove herself...and can't see to drive back anytime soon...

This means Melissa has three possible choices to get home: try to ask a stranger, if she can find one trustworthy enough, ride the bus, which luckily has a stop down the street from what she remembers, or try to walk home while practically blind.

Why didn't she just wait till she could see?
