Chapter 5 by CxSeth CxSeth

Which deal does Johanna accept?

Sleep on the floor. It's cheap.

Johanna shook her head. Her situation might be ****, but she wasn't about to sell her body for a place to sleep. "37," She said, before crouching down to remove her socks.

"Including you?" King asked, turning back towards the fire.

"No. Me, my crew of 25, and 12 captive pirates. I suspect I’m the only one who made it here alive.”

King rose to his feet, then walked over to a corner of the room, where he opened a hidden cupboard and began to dig around inside. “That many people, one or two others might have made it here, if they’re lucky. The storms are intense over the island, but at sea they’re ****.” He turned back towards Johanna, who handed him her socks and received a carved wooden mug in return.

"That wooden handle over there is for water," He pointed, and Johanna quickly found the round knob set in the wall. "Place the cup beneath, turn clockwise to open, then back again to close. Try not to spill. Food will be ready soon."

Johanna followed his instructions, and realized that she was incredibly parched. She filled and drained the mug twice before she was satisfied, after which she returned the mug to the cupboard she had seen King get it from. While there, she took the initiative to retrieve a pair of plates that seemed to be carved from some sort of bone or shell, before walking over to sit next to King as he finished cooking.

Johanna didn’t recognize exactly what meat or which vegetables King eventually set on her plate, but she was hungry and would have eaten just about anything. Even after finishing the tasty meal, she had no hint about what she had just consumed except to recognize that it had been lightly salted. She gave a satisfied sigh, then watched as King took the plates, scraped the excess food matter into the fire, gave them a quick rinse, then returned them to the cupboard. For a wild man living by himself in the jungle, he was remarkably civilized. When he turned back around with a short length of cord in his hand, Johanna looked startled for a second, before remembering that she had agreed to let him bind her feet if she slept on the floor.

“Don’t fully trust me yet?” She asked, raising an eyebrow but otherwise allowing him full access to her feet, which he bound together in a tight, but not particularly uncomfortable, series of knots.

King answered while double-checking his work. “I left your hands free, didn’t I? You could probably untie yourself if you wanted.”

Johanna thought about it for a second, then answered, “The deal was for you to untie me in the morning. I’ll wait.”

King stood up and smiled down at Johanna. “Good. I foresee a long and profitable relationship between us. Now stay here for a few minutes while I take care of a couple things outside.” With that, he turned away and climbed back up the ladder, disappearing once more. Johanna had a sneaking suspicion that this was yet another test of her honesty and reliability, so she just stayed where she was, observed her surroundings, and waited.

The light filtering in from outside very suddenly cut off, leaving the room illuminated only by the crackling light of the fire, and after a couple more minutes, King descended the ladder once more. He removed her- no, his coat, and then his pants, folding them carefully and placing them near his ladder, apparently unconcerned with the fact that Johanna had an unobstructed view of his entirely naked form. He was definitely a good looking man, she decided, and he clearly took good care of himself, although his social skills could certainly use some work. There was no sign of concern as he turned to Johanna and gave her a good look at his healthy manhood. “Stay there, by the fire, but otherwise make yourself comfortable. The rain will be starting momentarily, and will continue until sunrise. If you wake up before I do and it’s not raining-” He paused, and the telltale pitter-patter of rain began to sound above them, “Like that. If it’s not raining like that, feel free to wake me and I’ll untie you. You may also wake me if you find yourself in dire need of something during the night. Other than that.” He walked past her, towards the bed, “Sleep well, I guess. Any questions?”

The man was remarkably thorough and careful. Johanna couldn’t think of any questions, or at least, none she was willing to pay for. In all honesty, she was drained, and a good night’s sleep sounded perfect. So, with no further ceremony, she wished King a good night, and settled into the floor, trying to make herself comfortable by the toasty embers of the dying fire. The waves of exhaustion she’d been unconsciously fighting off all day hit her all at once, and Johanna quickly drifted into a deep slumber.

Rise and shine?
