Sisters?

Twin sisters.

Not identical, but close enough that only a doctor or somebody with intimate knowledge of them could tell otherwise.

While Charlie was a raging tomboy, who acted a she-wolf to a roaming pack of her male friends, Ashley was the opposite. Quite, reversed, outright girly during her youth, she ran in very different, less rowdy, circles. It seemed the two sisters were fated to only be alike in appearance.

And even against that, they rebelled.

Charlie wore her hair short, while Ashley kept hers long all their lives. To many, this was the major flag to tell them apart, but a trained eye could see little differences. Ashley’s body was less tanned, it only being the shade of her skin rather than the kiss of the sun. Charlie stood half an inch taller, something you would only notice if the girls were side by side or you simply spent enough time in one or the others’ company. Ashley was slightly thicker, not burning as many calories as her outdoorsy sister, but by no means fat by contrast.

But to many, Ethan included, there was something else, something intangible.
