Chapter 13
by generaljiggler
The halls seemed empty when he got here, maybe Cody should wash up now. Of course he could always wait until later and use this time to catch up with some friends online.
Shower can wait. Lets loaf around online for a while.
Truth be told, Cody really just wanted to relax. It had been a couple of days now since he had spoken to any of his friends from home and, while he wasn't exactly keen to tell them exactly what had happened since his arrival it would be good to hear from a friend right now. Sure, a shower would have been nice but there was no need to rush it. It would probably be safer for his privacy to wait until the dead of night anyway when he was certain the rest of the house was sleeping. With his mind made up he took a seat in front of his computer and booted it up.
Time passed uneventfully, as it usually does on a computer, as Cody shifted through the usual slosh of status updates on Facebook or a picture dump of cat photos. For a while he felt like he was the only person on the entire internet until a familiar ping of a message received.
AllRiledUp: Cody! There you are! You've been missing all weekend, where ya been?
Ha, Riley. She had been Cody's best friend ever since grade school when he first moved to his old home ages ago. She shoved him over on the playground, he pulled her hair in retaliation, they both got in trouble for fighting in second grade, and they'd been thick as thieves ever since. If he were being honest, Cody had had a crush on her ever since middle school but could never quite work up the guts to actually ask her out. Even if all of their friends said she had a crush on him as well he could never shake the feeling that she was out of his league. Still excited to get word from his best friend though Cody rapidly typed out his reply.
CodedForTrouble: You didn't get the text I sent? I was moving yesterday.
AllRiledUp: Wait that was YESTERDAY? OMG Cody I'm so sorry! I wanted to see you off before you left!
A tiny smile hit his lips. He had been a little disappointed she wasn't there to say bye when his cab had pulled up, it was going to be the last time they'd see each other for a while as Riley was leaving for college out of state. It had actually cast a bit of a shadow on his leaving but it looks like it was just oversight after all.
CodedForTrouble: Yup, moved in yesterday afternoon. Already got all my stuff into my new room and everything. Room is HUGE!
AllRiledUp: Oh yeah? This was that boarding house place, right? Is it what you were expecting?
CodedForTrouble: Uh, more than expected honestly.
AllRiledUp: Oooo, sounds juicy. Tell me all about it!
The smile dropped. Riley might have been his longest known friend and a long time confidant, but there was absolutely no way in hell he was going to let her know about how the his first night here lead to the immediate loss of his virginity or how he was the bottom in the surprise coupling.
CodedForTrouble: Oh, uh, nothing serious. Just a couple odd rules and stuff, you know.
AllRiledUp: Bullshit, I can tell when you're hiding something. Just tell me.
CodedForTrouble: No no, really! Just some of the house policies are a little odd. Like, I'm the only guy in the house for example.
AllRiledUp: Wait, you're the only guy there?
AllRiledUp: Like, no other men? Just you and a bunch of chicks?
CodedForTrouble: Uh, yeah. Looks that way.
AllRiledUp: Oh...
For a while Riley went silent on her end. It wasn't like her to just drop in a conversation but Cody couldn't see anything that might have upset her. Eventually her message window flashed again
AllRiledUp: Probably some real cute ones out there, huh?
CodedForTrouble: They're uh, not really my type.
AllRiledUp: No?
CodedForTrouble: No. Lets just say they're... quirky.
AllRiledUp: Huh. I see...
Again she went silent. Once or twice the message would show that she was typing a new response only for it to be deleted. After almost ten minutes of silence she spoke.
AllRiledUp: Hey, Cody, you know my move in date to my dorm was pushed back a week.
CodedForTrouble: Yeah?
AllRiledUp: Yeah.
AllRiledUp: And since I know classes for you won't start until next monday I was thinking maybe I could stop by and visit.
CodedForTrouble: What, come up here?
AllRiledUp: Duh. Everyone else has already left for their universities and stuff so I'm really bored out here. I thought maybe I could crash with you for a couple of days.
AllRiledUp: You know, if it's no big deal or anything.
CodedForTrouble: Oh man! That'd be great!
CodedForTrouble: Oh. Wait.
CodedForTrouble: I might need to ask permission or something first...
A worrying thought had seized Cody's mind. He would want nothing more than to spend the last week before college started with Riley, especially to have her sleep over in his room. But the other residents... knowing what he knew of them it might not be the best idea to bring a girl around at all and that was if it was even allowed. He shuddered to think what sort of punishment would be in store if he issued such an invitation without the proper authority.
AllRiledUp: Permission? Come on, you're an adult.
AllRiledUp: What's the worst they can even say?
AllRiledUp: Come on, this is our last chance to see each other until the winter. I'd like it to be special.
CodedForTrouble: I dunno...
Spending time with Riley before it's too late DOES sound great, but is it better to beg forgiveness than ask permission?
