She turned them down... but

"Well, here's what happened." Jennifer starts to explain. "After the ceremony we were partying all night at the Governors ball and I was hanging out with Anne and her guy. It was getting really late and we were drinking and the party was about to end and Anne leaned over to me and said something like, 'I'm having so much fun. Do you want to come back to our hotel room and...." and then she stopped like she didn't want to say what came next so she just said, '...you know.' So I said, 'Does it seem less naughty if you don't actually say the word 'threesome?' And Anne smiled this big naughty smile. But I pointed at her Oscar and said. "I think you already have enough people for a threesome." And I swear I was just joking but Anne looked at it, like she was just realizing how it was shaped and really considering it."

You're shocked by the story and you look over at Kate who sits with her mouth agape.

And Jennifer goes on. "The Oscar is phallic but really heavy. I don't think you could really use it like that. Unless you were going to put it on the ground and squat on it or something. Anyway, it's not like I've spent a lot of time wondering about what exactly Anne did to it that night when she got home. But whatever it was, it wasn't with me."

"You turned them down." You say, filling in the blank of the story, a little disappointed that there were no more juicy developments; a little disappointed in what that means for your evening.

"I told them I was really exhausted from the day." Jennifer explains. "But I wouldn't feel too bad for them. I saw them leaving the place a few minutes later with Amy Adams."

"So you're just not into that sort of thing." Kate says, seeming more interested in the details than even you are. You've never seen pretty, shy Kate seem this into someone before.

"No, I think I could be into it. I really was exhausted. I don't think it would have been very good sex. Sometimes I'm honest to a fault. I'll just tell people the truth whether they ask or not." Jennifer takes a sip of wine.

Neither you nor Kate know how to respond to that, or where she's going with it.

So she continues, "For example. Right now I'm not exhausted. Actually I'm feeling quite energetic... and happy. You?"

And you look over at Kate, to whom she's directed the question. Kate just stares at her with her big brown eyes, her hand rubbing her neck and the exposed top of her chest. It's uncommon to see your girlfriend this clearly bothered out in public. And if you know her, you know that she probably won't be able to take it much longer.

You're right. After waiting a good long time and shuffling in her seat, Kate answers Jennifer, seeming as nervous and excited as you are.
