That would be nice. Zayden would be happy too. This way the future he envisioned with Kaileigh would not have been taken away by me. “So, I take it you understand why you are all here?” The druid says as he stand up.

My dad gets up and yells “It’s because you cheated on my daughter!”

The druid turns to him and tells him to calm down. “For you, it’s your daughter, for me, it’s my grandson. It will already be difficult to rule impartially as it is. We don’t need to make it any more emotional than it needs to be.” He says calmly. My father looks at him and then sits back down. All the elders are expected to be wise and my father sure has wisdom. “Zayden,” Our druid says as he turns back to us. “I remember how last year you were in a relationship with Kaileigh, and while I would have granted you a future with her, our ancestors decided differently. They felt Mearna would be a better match for you. What made you think that you would know better than them.”

Zayden, feeling a bit uncomfortable as well, gathers his courage and answers. “It is not that I felt Mearna was not a good match. Honestly, I have come to appreciate her a lot. Even love her.”

“Then why did you cheat on her?” My father asks while trying to keep his anger inside.

“No offense, sir.” Zayden explains. “But it would only count as cheating if she didn’t know about it.”

This leaves my dad confused. “What?”

Zayden then starts to explain the agreement I offered to him. The one where I would permit him to continue seeing Kaileigh. He basically admits that all the rumors were true. Many of the elders are gasping that I would suggest my husband to cheat on me and my dad is clearly having a hard time with this.

“We can’t let this stand.” My dad says after Zayden finishes explaining. “We need to set an example.”

“Remember the lumberjacks?” The scribe, Rowena’s grandmother, says as she turns her head to my dad. “They and their wives too have an arrangement. They regularly do a partner swap and we’re not cracking down on them. If your daughter got manipulated into this, it would be wrong. But as long as she says she is fine with it, it could be that they discussed this arrangement with her and approved of it.”

My dad was about to say something, but I interrupt him by saying, “I want this.” Of course that makes everybody stare at me. I take a deep breath and continue. “I … I like Kaileigh. S-she’s m-my best friend. I … never had one b-before. I w-want to s-share Zayden with her.”

It seems to be too much for my father, because he gets up and walks out of the room. I do feel bad for that. But it’s not as if we can un-impregnate Kaileigh again.

“Like Keira said, It is not up to us to judge how you live your romantic life. If the three of you are going to be happy with this kind of polygamy, then so be it.” The druid continues. He then looks at Kaileigh and says, “Our concern is how you have violated our rules on Samhain. The event is one between people who are single, to try and help them find a partner to start a family with. By pairing up with a married man, you denied a single guy a chance to have a family.” He then looks at me and Zayden and says, “The same goes for the both of you.”

“I disagree.” Kaileigh says in response. “Whichever man I would have ended up with is a man I would not have feelings for. It would have been a marriage without love. I would rather not be married then be wed to a man I don’t love.”

“You think your feelings put you above all the others, Kaileigh? That everybody should follow the rules except for you because you have a good reason to break with them?” The marshal says sternly. “I am sure that if we ask the others villagers, they too will come up with a lot of reasons why the rules should be bent for just them but no one else. Maybe we should ask Aislinn about this. Let’s see what answer she has for you.” He has a point there, but Kaileigh apparently already has an answer ready.

“The difference between me and Aislinn is that she didn’t have a Samhain child. I do.” Kaileigh quickly responds. “And our laws clearly state that a Samhain child must be raised by both a father and a mother. If you deny me a chance to marry Zayden, you would be breaking that rule and my Samhain child will grow up fatherless.”

That is the loophole I came up with. As long as Kaileigh has Zayden’s Samhain child, the rules demand that she marries Zayden, and the elders are adamant about following the rules. I am sure that they will agree that Kaileigh must now be married to Zayden.

The elders whisper amongst themselves a bit, then they announce their answer.

“The ancestor Kaileigh is carrying must have a father. So yes, she can marry Zayden. But only with Mearna’s approval.” The druid says.

I quickly answer. “I approve.”

“Zayden.” The druid says as he sternly looks at my husband. “You should never forget that Mearna is your first wife. If at any point Mearna is to become unhappy as a result of you paying more attention to Kaileigh, she can ask us to have your marriage to Kaileigh annulled.”

“I understand.” Zayden answers as he nods.

Still staring at Zayden, the druid continues. “Remember that for a married man to mate with another woman on Samhain is still you breaking the rules. And while we are not going to punish you for it, the ancestor spirit surely will.”

Having gotten myself so invested in Kaileigh’s happiness, I forgot about the ancestors. Oh no. What have I done. Will I get bad luck? Will something happen to my Sheila? No, she is an ancestor herself. The ancestors will not harm one of their own. They are wise enough not to do that. Regardless of my worries, Kaileigh is now permitted to marry Zayden, like the two of them planned before I messed it all up. So I guess at least that problem is solved. So yeah, one problem at a time.

A few days later there was a wedding big feast. Though the feast was mostly for the other people that paired up and got Samhain children. Me, Zayden and especially Kaileigh got a lot of weird looks. There were of course some people who looked past all that and simply understood where we were coming from. Like Tiona, Owen and their families.

Later that night, when Zayden and I go back home, we take Kaileigh with us. She is going to live with us from now on. She makes a joke about us needing to get a bigger bed, but it’s actually true. The bed we currently have will be too small for the three of us to sleep in. Good thing Zayden is a carpenter.

To finish our day though, the three of us do a little private wedding ceremony. This time, not one for me and Zayden, or Kaileigh and Zayden, but for me and Kaileigh. The elders would never permit 2 women to get married, but if I am going to share Zayden with Kaileigh and Kaileigh needs to share him with me, then the least Zayden can do is share me with Kaileigh. In this private wedding of ours, I give Kaileigh my wedding vows and Kaileigh gives hers to me. Officially, Zayden shall be the only one married to 2 people, but unofficially, Kaileigh and I shall also be in a double marriage.

It is quite a far cry from about a year ago. Back then, I was the lonely girl who feared to never be able to spend my life with anyone. Today however, I have 2 people to spend my life with. Life really can turn out so strange.

After our private wedding ceremony, the three of us go to bed where we celebrate our marriages by having sex for a very long time.
