Chapter 3 by AttenTen AttenTen

What kind of trouble will the amnesiac sheriff run into?

She runs into Jesse and Jane

As Texas wandered the streets trying to sort out her thoughts, two of her more noteworthy foes were at that very moment plotting against her. The villainous twins Jesse and Jane had woken up bright and early intending to cause trouble. They skulked the empty streets giddily, their hands clutched tight on the sacks with which they would carry their stolen goods. Neither sister was particularly sharp, as shown in their incredibly simple plan: get up at sunrise before anyone was up and steal from the nearest bank. Who in their right mind would be up so early in the morning? That reasoning was more than enough convince them that their plan was foolproof.

"I gotta hand it to ya, sis. This just might be the best idea you had all week" Jane said as she looked over to Jesse. When they weren't being directed by Vivian or Georgia, she trusted her sister to do much of the plotting and scheming. The difference in their intellect was scarcely noticeable, but as far as Jane was concerned, Jesse was one of the smartest people she knew.

"I know, right? While these suckers are snoozing the day away, we're gonna make off with all their coin!" she snickered. "It should be against the law to be so smart!"

"Heheh, yeah! Even Texas wouldn't be out THIS early! This is the perfect kinda weather to be sleeping in till noon!"

Neither sister considered for a moment that other people didn't operate under the same sleep schedule as them. Dangerous as they were, the pair were also incredibly lazy, spending most of their free time eating and sleeping. Still, they were confident that their assumption was correct as they continued walking the empty streets. They were so caught up in their chatter that they didn't notice the sheriff heading their way from the opposite end of the street.

"Excuse me"

The sisters froze, a chill running down their spines as they recognized the voice. They turned their attention forward and standing before them was the bane of their existence, Sheriff Texas Stanton. The weasel looked at them with a friendly smile, paying no mind to the sacks in their hands. Jesse was the first to speak as she stepped back into a defensive stance. Startled as they were, their size and strength far outclassed the relatively small weasel.

"Well well, look who it is. I didn't think you would be up so early too" she said with a grin. To her surprise, Texas's face seemed to visibly brighten from her words.

"Oh! So... you two know me?" she asked curiously.

"What kinda stupid question is that?" Jane snorted. "Of course we know you! What, are you tryin' to play stupid with us or something? Cause we're WAY too smart for THAT"

"Oh, pardon mah rudeness!" Texas said as she held her hands up. "Ah didn't mean no disrespect ma'am, ah'm just... having a bit of trouble gettin mah thoughts together..."

Jesse and Jane stole confused glances at each other. Texas couldn't recall a time where the sheriff had spoken to them so respectfully. It was a nice change of pace, but it made them incredibly suspicious of her. Jesse huffed as she walked up to Texas. Her sister mirrored her actions, walking up to the back of the weasel to cut off her only path to escape.

"So, what're you gonna do now? You gonna stop us from hitting up the bank?" Jane asked as her nostrils flared, blowing hot hair down onto the back of Texas's neck. The weasel blinked and looked back at her with an expression of wide eyed innocence.

"Hitting up the bank? What does that mean?" she asked curiously.

"It means we're going to rob it! God!" Jesse growled as she pinched the bridge of her nose.

"Oh. Well... why would ah be stopping you from doing that?"

That question left both sisters at a lost for words and they immediately lost their intimidating aura as they just stared at her. Why was she even talking with them? Their normal conversations tended to last all of five seconds as they traded barbs before throwing down. Jane cleared her throat as she suddenly felt very awkward.

"Because... that's like... what you do?" she asked slowly. Texas looked back at her again, the gears in her head clearly turning.

"Oh, okay. So ah normally stop you guys from 'hitting up the bank', right?"

"That's... right" Jesse responded in a cautious tone.

"Hmm..." Texas placed a hand on her chin in thought before looking back up at Jesse with a sheepish smile. "Ya'll been real helpful and ah'm sorry for wasting yer time, but... if ya'll don't mind me askin... what exactly is a 'bank?'"

Jesse stared blankly at the sheriff as it finally dawned on her that this was not a trick. Their long time foe had gone absolutely batty. She looked over at her sister and noticed the bewildered expression on her face. She hadn't yet reached an epiphany regarding the weasel's mental state. Rolling her eyes, Jesse grabbed onto her arm and pulled her off to the side. She glanced back at Texas with an awkward smile.

"Can you give us a sec?" she asked. Texas smiled and nodded, making her wince on the inside. She wrapped an arm around Jane's shoulder and pulled her in close to keep the sheriff from hearing their conversion. "Sis, I think something's wrong with Texas. It's like she doesn't remember us or something!" she whispered.

"You mean she's got insomnia?!" Jane whispered back in astonishment.

"No, not that, dummy! I mean she's got that head problem that makes it so she don't remember nothin!"

"That's what insomnia means, stupid!"

"Oh. Right." Jesse said as she scratched. She wasn't book smart, so she just took her sister at her word. "Anyway, this is opportunity of a lifetime! Texas don't know that she's supposed to be stopping us!"

"Really?" Jane asked with a wide grin. "Sweet! Let's squish her and mosey on over to the bank!"

"You're not thinking far enough, sis!" Jesse said as she squeezed Jane's shoulder. "Think about it. Texas's brain is a blank slate, so she'll believe anything we tell her! We can get her to do whatever we want!"

Jane blinked, the gravity of the situation finally hitting her. Her mind spun with all the possibilities it presented, all the ways they could exploit the weasel's ailment for their own gain. They looked back at Texas, who continued to watch them with that same friendly smile. The way she saw it, these two sisters were a pair of friendly strangers who were taking time out of their busy day to help jog her memory. The pair looked at each other and exchanged wicked grins. This was going to be fun.

How do Jesse and Jane exploit the sheriff?
