Does Stacy stay up front or hang out in back?
She goes to the back
Meredith takes the first driving shift so Stacy heads into the back. As the RV starts to roll down the road she looks at her home for the next few days. It's sparse. There's a small kitchen with both a microwave, propane stove, tabletop convection oven, and fridge. She finds one closet where her Dad put her travel clothes alongside Meredith's clothes. Next to that cabinet is another one that opens up wide. Inside is an old tube television from the 90s, a VCR, a couple dozen VHS tapes, some board games, and books. "Quaint," Stacy scoffs closing the cabinet.
In the center, there's a small fold-out table between two chairs and across the way a small couch. She pauses at the couch and lifts the cushion. She releases a quiet sigh of relief as it's clear it folds out into a bed. Up until that point, she was worried the only bed was the one above the cab of the RV. There was no way she was sleeping in the same bed as Meredith.
Finishing her tour, Stacy pulls out her laptop and sits at the small table. She plugs it into the wall and opens it to consult the map she'd plotted days before. Stacy sighs. If they were going to UC Berkeley the trip would basically be a straight shot across the country on Interstate-80. That isn't what Stacy's map showed. Stacy's map had the trip dropping down to I-70 around Akron, Ohio and following that to a small town outside of Wichita, Kansas.
Stacy clenches her fists looking at the map. Once again, Meredith was messing with her life. At some point, she'd need to talk to Meredith about her plan because there was no way she was skipping this opportunity to meet her long-distance lover. Stacy clicks on the Internet connection on her laptop to see if she can figure out the wi-fi in the RV. When she does she sees no options. She also notices the little plug is missing from her battery symbol.
She pulls the plug out of the wall and walks around the RV trying all of the power outlets. Nothing. That's when she notices the clock on the microwave is dark. That's when she notices the post-it note on the fridge.
"Meredith,
The coach battery was dead and we didn't have enough time to buy a new one before your trip. The fridge should stay cool between campsite charging as long as you don't open it too often. Leaving this note in case I forget to mention it before you hit the road.
Love,
Dad"
Stacy doesn't know much about how RVs are powered, however, it's fairly clear as to why all of the power is out. She releases a frustrated groan. No power must mean no wifi. It also means her laptop won't last for more than a couple of hours of watching the movies she has downloaded. She looks at her phone on the countertop and picks it up. The power bar reads 86 percent. She sighs loudly and decides she should probably check on the power situation in the front of the RV - which means spending more time with Meredith.
She parts the curtain separating the back of the RV to the front.
"Oh hey," Meredith is surprised as Stacy clambers into the front of the RV and sits in the passenger seat. She was sure her rival would spend as much time as possible avoiding her. She can't help but let a small smile cross her face hoping it means Stacy's open to talking about their unfortunate history. "How's the back?"
"No power. Your Dad left a note on the fridge," she looks around for a USB port so she can plug in her phone.
"Seriously? Ugh. This thing is such a dump on wheels," she points at the cigarette lighter. "If we want to charge our phones up here I think we need to get an adaptor for the cigarette lighter. My grandparents used to have something like that for their old car."
Stacy looks at her phone. 86 percent. "Yeah, we should definitely prioritize that. We'll need our google maps."
"Oh yeah, for sure, but my Dad also drafted up a paper map with RV parks along our route. It's in the glove compartment. He added some suggestions for short trips to national parks."
Stacy clicks a link she'd emailed to herself that opens the map to her lover's house. She glances at Meredith and tries to work up the courage to try and convince her travel partner that they aren't following her Dad's map. She opens her mouth to start the awkward conversation but just as she does a new text alert pops up. It's from Tyler. "Good morning, babe! I know you're busy spending time with your fam but wanted to tell you I can't wait to see you! Let me know if you can find some time to talk today. I miss hearing your voice."
Stacy feels a small pang of guilt reading his text. She'd been telling Tyler she wasn't leaving for three more days, so she'd have time to go meet her lover for the first time and spend a couple of nights with him. After that, she'd be on her way across the rest of the country where Tyler was already settled into his apartment near campus. He didn't know her plan was to break up with him as soon as she arrived. She'd tried to do it a few times over the phone but couldn't get it out.
"Yeah, let's talk soon," Stacy replies adding a kissing emoji. She glances at Meredith again. If she's going to get Meredith to change the course of their trip she'll need to confess she's been cheating on Tyler.
"Are you okay with getting a couple of hours driving in before we stop for chargers?" Meredith asks breaking Stacy's train of thoughts.
"Yeah, sure, whatever," Stacy says coldly continuing to feel frustrated with the whole situation.
"Cool, but you might want to go easy on your phone use until we get the chargers. We should both keep our phones as charged as much as possible in case we have an emergency or something." Meredith wasn't really that worried about the phone's running out of power. I-80 wasn't exactly in the middle of nowhere so it would be fairly easy to pull off and grab a charger any time. What she really wanted was to get Stacy to talk to her so they could get the uncomfortableness out of the way.
"I suppose," Stacy says and puts her phone into a pocket on the door.
