Chapter 4
by croland
What is Diana trying to tell Tom?
She asks Tom what he wants
"I wanted to ask you if that's what you still want." Diana said, looking down and clasping her hands in front of her.
Tom was astonished to see a blush of red creeping into her face. For the first time since he put the sticker on her body the new version of Diana seemed bashful. It was a trait that he would never expect on either Dr. Kahn or the old version of his wife. So why was it on her face now?
"That's what we agreed on. That's what you told me you wanted." Tom said.
"Yeah, and look, I think I like being me way more the old version did. I don't know if it's the magic, or it's just my new perspective of having access to Dr. Kahn's memories, but I realized I never asked what you wanted in all of this. I remember all the awful things the old me said to you. The way she treated you. It wasn't fair. You still need to spend more time with our children, and we're going to talk about all the new perspectives I have now that I can access therapist's memories, because you have your share of flaws too mister. But I want to work on that together. The first step to that is asking what you want. Because I steamrolled you on this whole plan. I hope you like this new version of me, but I need to include you on this. Do you want her to become the new Sophia Kahn? Maybe we could give my old body the identity of one of those gross CEOs, the kind who are squandering their power. We could give her Ruby Johnson's identity, she could be a big-time movie star. The point is we would do it together." Diana said.
Tom pulled her into a tighter embrace. It felt like he was meeting his wife all over again. He was so ashamed at how he'd been treating her. Tom had forgotten how wonderful his wife could be. She had made sure to give her identity to a body that wasn't just hot, but had the skills of a trained psychiatrist. Even amidst all the bullying she'd had the presence of mind to think about how to make herself a better person.
"What about Sophia Kahn though? If we make the old you into someone else wouldn't it be like we just made her cease to exist?" Tom said.
Tom felt a hot gust of air on his chest as Diana buried her face into his shirt and started laughing at him.
"What?!" Tom said.
"You can be really sweet, but you've got to be a bit more decisive dear, and you definitely need to pay more attention to what is going on around you. You're trapped in your head too much sometimes. Haven't you noticed that I still have Sophia Kahn's job? I have her memories. She hasn't gone anywhere, you haven't killed her. I know I'm biased, but the way I see it you've simply added me on top of her. Sophia Kahn is still here, she's just Diana Miller now. Ugh it's complicated to explain! But I promise you didn't do anything wrong. You can relax, and have a little fun, you know?" Diana said softening her voice as she felt Tom relax around her.
"I guess I still have a lot to learn about how magic stickers work." Tom said.
"We both do. I'm fine if you make her the new Sophia Kahn. I realize now I never knew how to tell you I wanted to get a job, and I think this was the best way I knew how with the limited tools I had." Diana said.
"I'm totally okay with that!" Tom said, his voice defensive. Diana arched an eyebrow, and Tom realized what he was doing, and gave her sweet look of understanding. "Sorry, I cut you off. What were you saying."
Diana gave a triumphant harumph, pleased at how well Dr. Kahn's skills were already serving her.
"Thank you dear. I know I was getting off of the point, but what I was trying to say is that I'm okay if I don't get to keep this practice. I can go back to work in non-profit. It won't be easy, but I can try. I'm just saying we don't have to do that. The point is that was the old plan I made myself, I want to hear what you want."
Diana was opening up to him, and tom sighed as he tried to let himself do the same.
"Even if I want to punish that old body of yours?"
"It's just an empty shell now. I abandoned my body. I don't think anyone has claim to it anymore. So I don't know what you want to do, but ethically, I think I'm okay with it. I'm biased. I like this new me, and I don't feel guilty for becoming this. The old Diana doesn't exist anymore than the old Sophia. Any person we decide to make will be just as satisfied, and just as novel as this new version of me. So I'm just saying, we can get a little creative." Diana said.
What does Tom want to do with his wife's old body?
