Chapter 4
by bricktamland
A week later, Sarah asks Debrah to come over to hang out
She agrees
A week had passed since Debrah's first pet-sitting stint, and Sarah decided to invite her sister over to her house for a casual hangout. As they sat in the living room, Sarah tried to engage in conversation, but she couldn't help but notice that Debrah seemed more preoccupied with playing with Max than having a proper chat.
"You've been spending a lot of time with Max lately," Sarah observed, her curiosity piqued. "Is everything okay?"
Debrah's eyes flickered for a moment, torn between her connection with Max and the conversation at hand. "Oh, I just really enjoy spending time with him. He's such a fun companion."
Sarah found this strange, but she didn't push the matter further until later when she found Debrah in the pantry, munching on one of the dog treats. Shocked, she confronted her sister about the peculiar behavior.
"What on earth are you doing, Debs? Those treats are for Max, not for humans!" Sarah exclaimed, her concern deepening.
Debrah looked sheepish, crumbs on her chin. "I know, I know, but they taste so good! I can't help myself, and besides, they help me relax. You should try one."
Feeling a mix of curiosity and ****, Sarah took the offered treat from her sister. The taste was surprisingly delightful, but she couldn't get over the idea of eating a dog treat.
"They might taste good, but I got them for Max, not for us," Sarah said firmly, setting the treat aside.
As they returned to the living room, Debrah reflexively turned on the TV, and they found themselves watching a program about helping family members achieve their desires. Debrah tried to explain further as they watched. "I've been trying to get on Max's level, you know? To understand him better. That's what the treats are for, anyway. I've got a in idea, and I really think it could work for me."
Sarah raised an eyebrow, not entirely sure what to make of this revelation. "Well, it's great that you're trying to connect with him, but remember, he's still just a dog, not a person."
Debrah nodded, her eyes bright with enthusiasm. "I know, but I can't help but feel that this could be my calling. I've been thinking of starting a business, offering dedicated pet sitting services. Understanding the pet's point of view might give me a leg up in this field. Plus I have started really enjoying hanging out with Max. He's helped me cheer up a lot, like a good friend."
Sarah couldn't shake the feeling that something was off about Debrah's sudden obsession with pets and the influence of those treats. Nevertheless, she cautiously said, "Well, if this is something you're passionate about, then I'll support you. But please, be careful with those treats. They might have unintended side effects."
The program went on, droning about families helping each other. "You know, Debs, if this is truly what you want, I'm happy to help you understand pets better," Sarah said.
Debrah's face lit up with gratitude, "You mean it?"
"Yeah, I guess so. But you'll have to agree to pet sit more often, at this point though, I think you won't have an issue with it!"
