Sister to Pet

Sister to Pet

Or - Never buy dog treats from Kazakhstan

Chapter 1 by bricktamland bricktamland

On a crisp autumn morning, the sun's gentle rays streamed through the windows of Sarah's rural home, illuminating the contrasting silhouettes of the two sisters seated at the kitchen table. Debrah, with her hazel eyes and wavy chestnut hair, looked older than her 33 years, the worry lines etched faintly across her forehead telling the tale of recent hardships. She was dressed in a plain white t-shirt, worn jeans, and a pair of sneakers, the epitome of casual attire.

Opposite her, sat Sarah, a vivacious 30-year-old with a striking resemblance to her sister, though her vibrant brown eyes reflected an undeniable energy. Her own dark hair was pulled back into a practical ponytail, and she wore a smart, button-up blouse paired with comfortable jeans, as befitted her profession as a pharma sales representative.

"So, you're really laid off, huh?" Sarah asked, concern tugging at her heartstrings as she studied her sister's downcast expression.

Debrah nodded, a hint of sadness in her eyes. "Yeah, they had to downsize due to budget cuts. It was unexpected, and now I'm at a loss for what to do next."

Sarah reached across the table, placing a comforting hand on her sister's. "Don't worry, Debs. We'll figure this out together. I wish I could help you find a job in my company, but there just aren't any openings right now."

Debrah's shoulders slumped, and she implored, "Please, Sarah, there must be something you can do. I can't keep staying at home, feeling useless and unsure of my future."

Sarah sighed, knowing her sister's desperation all too well. "Well, there's one thing I need help with, but it's not a job exactly. Max has been acting up lately when I'm at work. He gets anxious and destructive when left alone."

"Max? Your dog, right?" Debrah asked, a glimmer of hope shining in her eyes.

Sarah nodded. "Yes, he's a handful, but I can't afford to hire a dog sitter right now. If you could look after him during the day while I'm at work, it would be a tremendous help."

Debrah hesitated, knowing that caring for a rambunctious dog might not be the ideal solution she was hoping for, but it was better than nothing. "I appreciate that, Sarah, but isn't there anything else I could do? I have qualifications beyond dog-sitting, you know."

Sarah sympathetically smiled. "I know, Debs, and I'll keep my ears open for job opportunities. But right now, this is the best I can offer. Please, just give it a try for a while. I know Max would appreciate it."

Debrah's heart ached at the thought of being relegated to dog duty, but she also knew that her sister was doing her best to support her. With a heavy sigh, she relented, "Alright, I'll do it. But you better start looking for other options, too!"

Sarah beamed, relieved that Debrah had agreed to her request. "Deal! And don't worry, we'll get through this tough time together. Max will be a handful, but I know you'll manage just fine."

The next morning, Sarah led Debrah around her tastefully decorated home, pointing out Max's favorite spots and giving her detailed instructions on his care.

"Alright, Debs, this is Max's bed, and he loves to lounge on the couch too," Sarah said, gesturing to different areas. "Make sure to take him out for a walk around the property, I have 30 acres for him to run on, but he's a strong boy, so be prepared to hold on tight to the leash!"

Debrah nodded, a tad apprehensive about handling the exuberant canine, but she was determined to do her best. As they ventured outside for their first walk, Max's excitement was evident, his tail wagging fiercely as he led the way. However, his strength caught Debrah off guard, and she struggled to control him.

"Wow, he's really strong!" Debrah exclaimed, trying to keep her balance as Max tugged at the leash. Sarah chuckled sympathetically and offered some advice on how to handle him better.

After a brisk, slightly chaotic walk, they returned home, where Sarah showed Debrah the bag of training treats from Kazakhstan. "These treats are supposed to be an extra help for training," Sarah said with a grin. "Give them to Max as a reward when he does something good or learns a new trick."

Debrah was intrigued by the concept and agreed to give it a shot. She spent the day attempting to teach Max some basic commands, like sitting and shaking paws. Max, however, proved to be more interested in playtime than sitting still for lessons. The treats did catch his attention, but his energy often got the best of him.

Throughout the day, Sarah introduced Debrah to her home AI system, which left her in awe. The AI, named "Alex," was the most advanced of its kind, capable of controlling various aspects of the apartment with a simple voice command. It could order food, adjust the lighting and temperature, control the locks and security system, and even play music tailored to the occupants' preferences.

"Alex, play some soothing music," Sarah said, and instantly, a soft melody filled the room, creating a calming atmosphere.

Debrah's eyes widened with amazement. "This is incredible! It's like living in the future."

"It's a lifesaver, especially when I'm at work or away," Sarah explained. "And watch this—Alex, show me the pet camera."

A live feed from a camera set up in the living room appeared on the large flat-screen TV. There was Max, sitting by the window and looking adorable as ever.

"You can check on Max whenever you want using this camera," Sarah said. "It gives me peace of mind knowing he's okay when I'm not home."

As the evening approached, the apartment's lighting shifted to a warm, cozy glow, and soft music filled the air. Debrah couldn't help but feel impressed by how the AI created such a welcoming atmosphere.

"You really have everything figured out, don't you?" Debrah remarked with admiration.

Sarah chuckled. "Well, I like to keep things running smoothly, especially with Max around. He's a handful, but he brings so much joy into my life."
