“I’ll do anything. I want to be friends, I’ll fetch your coffee, I’ll do whatever you want me to. Just stop!”

“Why should I make a sad little loser like you my friend?”

“I can help you! Please, I’m begging you!”

“Well, you certainly can’t be my friend looking like a ragamuffin.”

You reach down and offer her your hand. She takes it and some ethereal part of you latches onto her. You can barely see it, a thin conduit for her light to feed you. The tiny trickle that flows is an exquisite aperitif for what will follow.

“We’ll see if Gregor can actually do anything with you. He’s brilliant, but you’re no easy job. Follow me.”

She follows you obediently for the twenty block walk to the spa. You walk in. You read the girl at the desks name tag.

“Jill, I have a special for Gregor. Give her the works. It goes on Phoebe’s tab.”

The mention of Phoebe’s name makes her squirm.

“Of course! We’ll clear a spot for her right away.”

“Go ahead, Mel. I’ll text you tomorrow and we can meet for coffee and see if you’re presentable.”

You leave Mel, wondering if she is too big a task for Gregor…
