She's Not the Biggest Fan
Yet, despite your lukewarm initial reaction to the film, something about it would stick with you. Thoughts of it occasionally came back in some of your darker moments to come.
Kaori came out of the movie rolling her eyes. You should have known that she would have problems with it. Kaori rarely sought those sort of stuff-shirt prestige films of her own volition. She preferred all manner of schlock and animation from Asia. That she watched it at all was almost certainly an attempt to accommodate your choice.
“Darlingggggg. They were so stupid. Why didn’t he just tell her? Ugh It was driving me crazy. If he really loved her he should have just, I don’t know, told her or something!”
You chuckled lightly at Kaori’s frustration, noting that it was a true story. Surely, they didn’t have total freedom to alter around events as they chose? But, that just led to you two dueling it out using search engines, checking to see just how true to life the adaptation really was.
“See! He didn’t even commit suicide in real life! He just went back to England! The movie totally made it up.”
As you both started for home, you noted that maybe the film should have kept the true end to the story. It might be more poetic if he died in the exact same way that she did. But, maybe if he lived, he could have learned something from it all.
