Chapter 25
by
SG
Poor Naomi.
She'll be fine.
Naomi's posture changed the instant she felt Sophie's fingers graze her back. She straightened up and gazed lovingly at her friend.
"Oh, thank God," she said. "That was horrible! Thank you for bringing me back, Soph. I owe you one."
Sophie was stunned at the transformation. Her best friend had gone from despondent to peaceful instantly. "Don't you... you still feel bad about Dave, right?"
Naomi frowned with concern. "Do I have something to feel bad about? I had sex with him. That's what you wanted, right?"
"No!" Sophie said with exasperation. "About how seconds ago you were suicidal over losing him!"
Naomi laughed. "Oh, that?" she asked with relief. "That feels like a lifetime ago. Why would I care about that?"
"So you don't care at all about Dave anymore? Not even a little?"
Naomi shifted to sitting cross-legged on the couch facing Sophie. "Of course I care about Dave," she said, taking Sophie's hands in hers. "He's your brother! You love him, right?"
Sophie nodded and Naomi gave her hands a reassuring squeeze. "Then I love him too. Every person on this Earth is exactly as valuable to me as they are to you, including myself."
"What the fuck..." Sophie muttered. She was looking down at her hands, so Sophie raised them to eye level.
"It's better than it sounds. I used to have so much anxiety around planning stuff! Remember the time we all went to Atlantic City?"
"Yeah," Sophie said weakly. Her eyes were watery. "You did such a good job."
"I know I did!" Naomi responded gleefully, her eyes laced with very different tears. "I used to stress so much about that stuff! I did such a good job because I was terrified I'd drop the ball or screw something up. I beat myself up for weeks over the twin bed fiasco!"
Sophie laughed. The only hitch in the whole trip was that two of the guys ended up with a single queen size bed instead of two twins. "They were homophobic dickheads anyway." She chuckled in spite of herself.
Naomi's heart swelled at the sound of Sophie's chuckle. Things were getting back to how they should be. Sophie was happy and Naomi was making her happier.
"The point is, I know you know I knocked that one out of the park. I see myself through your eyes, Soph! It's like all the doubt and self-loathing have been sanded off and I can see myself from outside."
"Wait," Sophie interrupted. "Are you saying that you're psychic?"
Naomi laughed again, knowing that laughter would continue to improve Sophie's mood. "No, of course not! You've told me a million times how impressed you were. Shit, one time I overheard you bragging about it to some guy you were trying to pick up! I know how you feel, and you like me so much more than I ever did."
"But only to the extent that you have value to me," Sophie said quietly.
"Yeah, dummy. That's the point. You love me, so I love me! It's a win-win!" Naomi said triumphantly.
Sounds like it.
