Shattered Veil: The Explosion
The three of them stood before the pressure-sealed decontamination chamber, the sterile hum of filtration systems and dormant airlocks filling the air. Pristine stainless steel and white tile gleamed coldly under harsh lights, while the burn chamber beyond pulsed with an ominous crimson glow.
Tiffany stood at the wall-mounted control tablet, her manicured nails clicking across the glass with crisp authority. Her black pencil skirt clung to the powerful curves of her hips and thick thighs, the red silk blouse shifting softly over her deep, inviting cleavage as she worked.
“I’ve gotta check you two in before I go,” she sighed, though her eyes sparkled with dry humor. “Access codes, protocols… all that corporate-ass-covering bullshit.” She glanced up. “Scarlett, you first.”
Scarlett stepped gracefully into the chamber. The first door sealed behind her with a heavy hiss-THUMP. Through the thick glass, Joe watched as high-pressure jets of cold air blasted her from every direction.
“Ah! Shit, it’s cold!” she squealed, laughing. Her blonde hair whipped wildly around her face like a golden storm. She grabbed the hem of her charcoal skirt with both hands, desperately trying to hold it down as the gale-force wind fought to flip it upward. The UV flash came next and for one electrifying second, the light outlined the perfect swell of her firm ass, the soft flare of her hips, the way her thighs clenched together, nipples stiffening visibly from the icy blast, peaking against the thin material.
God, she’s incredible, Joe thought, heat flooding his veins despite the sterile surroundings.
Tiffany moved closer to him, her shoulder brushing deliberately against his. Her voice dropped low and playful. “So… when did this happen?”
Joe couldn’t hide his grin. “Tonight’s our first date.”
“Good…” Tiffany murmured, bumping her shoulder into his again affectionately. “She’s cute. And the way she looks at you? She’s been waiting for this a long time.” And from the hunger in her eyes, she’s going to devour you tonight, Tiffany thought, a flicker of warm envy stirring low in her belly.
Inside the chamber, Scarlett wrung out her hair, still laughing softly, then slipped through the second door into the Clean Room.
“Your turn, White Knight,” Tiffany said, catching him staring at Scarlett again, tapping the screen with a fond smirk.
Joe stepped in. The door sealed with another hiss-THUMP. Then the storm hit. WHOOOOOMPH. A brutal blast of air slammed into him from all sides, ripping at his clothes and skin. His lab coat flapped violently. The UV flash followed, blindingly bright. A cool, sterile mist rolled over him, leaving his skin tingling.
He stepped into the Clean Room to join Scarlett.
The silence inside was still, intimate. Scarlett was carefully placing the last of her folders into the burn chamber. Joe’s eyes drifted to the plant itself; sealed in a bio-tube. Its glossy black stems twisted like living cords, ending in hypnotic violet petals veined with shimmering amber. The center pulsed faintly, almost breathing. Alien. Seductive.
“It’s beautiful,” Scarlett whispered, stepping closer to him until their arms brushed. “I can see why the bees were obsessed with it.”
“Guess their little hearts can take it,” Joe murmured, his gaze tracing her flushed cheeks and the way her blouse had shifted during the air blast, offering another tempting glimpse of that red lace. The air between them felt thick, heavy with everything they’d been holding back.
She giggled softly, the sound warm and intimate… until an ominous ping cut through the quiet.
Not metal. Glass.
One of the prototype cartridges in the burn chamber had a hairline fracture. The dark purple fluid inside swirled violently as pressure built from the rising heat. The crack spider-webbed wider.
That’s no good, Joe thought, instincts screaming.
He grabbed Scarlett hard, yanking her tight against his body for one heated second; soft skin crushing against his chest, her breath catching hot against his neck.
“What-?”
“GO!” he roared, shoving her back toward the decontamination chamber with every ounce of strength he had.
Tiffany was just stepping through the first door when she saw his face. Her eyes widened in recognition.
“Joe-?!”
He slammed the override mechanism. The door hissed open just enough. He practically threw Scarlett inside. She stumbled against the far wall with a sharp yelp.
“Joe-what are you-?!”
He slammed the door shut behind her.
Then the cartridge detonated.
BOOOOOOM!
The explosion was cataclysmic.
A violent supernova of violet flame and superheated gas erupted through the chamber like hell breaking loose. The shockwave hit with bone-shattering force, a roaring wall of pressure that lifted Joe off his feet and hurled him like a ragdoll. Shards of reinforced bio-glass exploded outward in a deadly storm, slicing through the air with lethal speed. Several punched into his back and shoulder like bullets, tearing deep into muscle and flesh with wet, sickening impacts. Searing agony exploded through his body as metal and glass fragments shredded fabric and skin.
He crashed hard into the thick observation glass, his blood spraying across it in a vivid crimson arc. The reinforced pane shuddered violently under the impact. Joe slid down the glass, leaving a smeared trail of red, and collapsed onto the cold tile floor in a broken heap.
Alarms screamed in a deafening wail.
Through blurred, fading vision, he saw them on the other side of the glass: Tiffany’s face drained of all color, frozen in horror, desperately trying to override the security measures. Scarlett was right in front of her, fists pounding frantically against the glass, screaming his name with raw, gut-wrenching terror. Tears streamed down her flushed cheeks, her eyes wide with panic and something far deeper; the fear of losing him before they’d even begun.
He couldn’t hear her over the ringing in his ears.
His vision swam. The cold floor pressed against his cheek. His fingers twitched and he whispered out Scarlett’s name.
Then everything faded to black.
