Secrets: Page 1

The next morning, I was awoken by an incessant knocking on my door. I pulled my head from my pillow, blinking the sleep from my eyes.

"It's open."

The knocking stopped, and Lexi (who else would it be?), opened the door.

"Hey, uh, can we talk?"

"I'm not doing anything else at the moment."

She sat at the end of my bed, fidgeting with the end of her shirt. I sat up, hoping I didn't look too bedraggled.

"So, I, uh, kissed you, last night."

"I remember that."

"Right yeah. So, like, I didn't mean to, like, pressure you into anything, so we can just like, forget that if you want."

"What if I don't want to?"

"Evan, you don't understand-"

"So enlighten me."

"There's stuff you don't know."

"That's not very enlightening."

"I can't tell you, I'm sorry."

"Everyone has secrets, Lexi."

"You would want to forget last night if you knew mine."

I tilted her face towards me. She looked so divided, torn between desire and fear.

"Try me."

"I just, I can't."

"Alright, don't tell me. But I'd like to see where this goes."

I grabbed her hand, briefly savoring the feel of her soft skin.

"You're very persuasive, you know that?"

"Well, I am a Valentine."

"What?"

If only there was a spell to put a foot in one's mouth. I panicked.

"Uh, nothing, sorry."

She looked at me curiously.

"You're weird Evan."

"So I've been told."

She laughed, just a little. Not much, but it gave me hope.

"Alright then. Evan, would you like to be my boyfriend?"

"Yes, I would."

She wrapped her arms around me. After a moment of silence, she whispered something in my ear.

"Don't hate me if you regret this."

"Deal."

She left to get breakfast, and I told her I'd be out there in a minute. As is typical for me though, I was delayed.

I quickly stripped out of my thin white tee and sweat pants, looking through my closet for a decent outfit.

"There's a nice view."

I stood up, turning around to see Samara gawking at my butt.

"Hey, stare at your own butt, it's nicer anyway."

"Wow, I give you a free spell, and I can't even look at your butt."

I sighed.

"You're right. Thank you."

"So I can look at your butt?"

"I can't really stop you, can I?"

"Nope."

"Any reason to visit me? Aside from my butt, that is."

She looked pensive for a moment.

"You know, I feel, see, hear, taste, and smell everything you do?"

"That's a little creepy."

She waved her hand, casually wafting away petty things like my privacy.

"See, Lucas, beyond that, I know you. As in, better than you know yourself."

"Somehow, I don't doubt that."

"I know her secret, Lucas."

I set the clothes down. She wasn't doing her usual half-smile.

"What is it?"

She shook her head.

"Not my place. But I will tell you this. Eventually, she'll tell you. And you'll think that it changes everything, but, I know you, and it won't matter in the end. Just be open."

"Wow, you make it seem like she's secretly a troll or something."

"She's scared, Lucas. You'll need to show her that it won't matter to you."

"It would be a lot easier if I knew what it is."

"She's not ready to tell you, and you aren't ready to know. Just trust me."

"Alright, I'll trust you."

"Good. Oh and uh, tell her the truth. Talk to you soon."

She gave me a chaste kiss on the cheek, then did that smoke vanish thing. I was worried she would be upset about me and Lexi, but I guess not. In fact, it seemed she was surprisingly ok keeping her hands off of me. I wondered how long that would last.

More than that, I wondered what Lexi's secret could be. What could possibly make Samara act so serious?
