Search for survivors.

After a moment of consideration, Johanna decided that priority number one was seeing if any other survivors had washed up on the shore of this island. She gave a quick glance around, to make sure there weren’t signs of life in the immediate vicinity, then picked a direction and started walking along the shoreline, leaving a trail of boot prints in the sand as she went.

She had time to think as she walked, between occasional stops to check under a piece of shipwreck or driftwood. Everything about this situation seemed unreal. That storm really did come out of nowhere, dark clouds seeming to just swirl into being above her ship, accompanied by the fiercest winds and biggest waves she’d ever seen. The mast cracked in minutes, men were knocked around as boards and ropes came loose, or swept overboard by waves the size of houses. A shiver ran down the captain’s spine just thinking about it.

She spotted a sailor lying face down after about fifteen minutes, but by the time she reached him, he had clearly been dead for hours, so Johanna laid him back in the sand and kept walking. Even this island shouldn’t be here. They had taken their prey, the infamous “Captain Bone,” on the open ocean, and were still nearly a week from the mainland. By all rights, she should be dead, either drowned or eaten by some shark or serpent. Instead she was here, walking along the beach, to see if anyone else shared her unlikely fate.

After about 40 minutes, right about the time she was thinking about giving up, she heard a faint voice in the distance. Johanna broke into a sprint, and soon came upon a rather large piece of hull half-buried in the sand. “Damnation!” She heard the voice again. Someone was trapped beneath it! The captain rushed forward to help…
