Savanah, Your Classmate

Savanah waits on her phone, smiling. When she hears you get close, she keeps her eyes looking down until you pull right next to her.

“G’Morning.” She says, climbing into the passenger side. “Good Morning,” you say back to her una hushed unnecessary whisper. She doesn’t say anything else, and keeps her phone in her hands.

Together you both patrol the fenced pastures where your cattle live. Savanah glances at her phone every-so-often, but soon tries to make small talk.

“How’s school? Are you ready to graduate?”

“School’s Good. And yes I am ready to graduate.” Your voice is unexpectedly deep.

She glances at her phone. “OH SHIT!!!!”

You pump the brakes hard. The **** of stopping tightens your seatbelt to squeeze your chest.

For a long Moment you pause your breath. Having to stop suddenly was more dramatic than it needed to be.

“What’s wrong?!” You ask Savanah.

She looks at you with wide eyes, but that is all she does. The blank expression on her face is an excuse for “nothing”.

“Damnit Girl! Tell me! Are you okay?”

“We-lll… do ya’ remember Kel?” She begins.

Kel was the guy she dated last year. Big guy, he was held behind for a few years in school. When he graduated Savanah mentioned he’d be moving to California.

She continues. “He’s coming back here… tomorrow….”

It feels like she’s leaving some details out.
