Chapter 319 by Jpyric Jpyric

The meeting breaks up, and everyone heads to their commands.

Savage fight

You approach your chosen battlefield shortly before noon. In the near distance you can see the dust and glint of metal from the opposing army approaching. Ochiba orders a halt, and your forces deploy into formation. You move front and center, the sunlight making your armor practically glow. Beside you, Kali gleams almost as brightly, in her silvered breastplate and glowing blade. On your other side, Clarissa is encased in her dark plate armor, her axe glowing orange just like her eyes within the depths of her helm. Looming behind you, Uzume casually rests her massive club on her shoulder, munching on a piece of bread as the enemy forms up opposite you. Beside her, Sadie casually floats, toying with lightning between her fingers. On the other side, Samara carries a simple longsword, but her black eyes are fixed on two figures emerging from the enemy lines.

The first is a hulking figure, possibly seven or eight feet tall, with a massive, cleaver like blade in each hand. Only knowing who this is could tell you that this is a female, her whole body encased in armor. Barely humanoid, she seems almost simian in her movements, with overlong, powerful arms almost dragging as she stumps forward. Curved horns sprout from the black plate helm, and clawed hand grip the swords tightly. This must be Denari, the brutal Lilim warrior.

The second figure is also tall, but far more lithe. Likely, this is Reyka, the Lilim commander. More lightly armored, she is also more obviously feminine, the lack of a helm revealing a sneering face. Her long black hair is tied back, and her purple skin has black, thorny growths all over. She carries a longsword that drips an ichor, which smokes as it drips onto the ground. Without a word, she points her sword towards your lines.

With a roar that you can feel even from where you are, Denari begins a loping run, directly towards you. As if in imitation, the enemy forces, an amalgamation of humans and monsters, similarly roar and begin to charge your lines. You hear the first ‘thump’ of your siege engines, and turn to glance at them. Several ballista and light catapults are firing, ably commanded by a blonde dwarf woman.

You turn back to see the impact send bodies flying, though the charge barely slows. Even repeated volleys seem to have little effect, with even wounded soldiers picking themselves up and continuing to charge, some even missing limbs! Quickly, they close the distance more, and you hear Ruka call out, “Archers, fire at will!”

Her command is echoed by sub commanders, and a deadly hail begins to rain on the charging horde. Still, anything less than a mortal wound seems to have no effect. They are close enough to make out individuals now, and you can see no fierce expression to match the ferocious shouts. Their eyes are expressionless, even as they slaver and foam at the mouth.

You feel the lines tense for impact, the dwarves to one side lifting shields in a solid wall, the orcs to the other leveling spears and hurling javelins. Uzume steps in front of you, eyes fixed upon the charging Lilim. As the lines come together with an earth rattling crash, she brings her club down towards the hulking Denari. She catches the club between crossed swords, but the impact stops her charge and even knocks her back a step. Uzume laughs, stepping forward and swinging again, connecting with the demon’s shoulder with a sound like a hammer hitting an anvil, leaving the heavy plate dented and forcing Denari into a roll.

Then you have no more time to watch the titanic battle, as a dead eyed human swings a sword at you like he’s chopping wood. You easily parry the stroke with your magical shield, and a return chop draws blood in a slice across his chest. He doesn’t seem to react at all to the blow, attacking again with a strike that you dodge. This time, your answering thrust punches through his chest, and he staggers back, before dropping to the ground. All down the line, the scene repeats, anything less than a killing blow is ignored, surprising many of your warriors.

Kali has no such problem. Grim faced, her flashing blade leaves limbs and cleaves bodies scattered about. Even when she missed a killing stroke, the power of her strikes flung her opponents away.

Similarly, Clarissa tears into the enemy like a steel whirlwind, her axe hissing as blood cooks off the glowing edge. Blades shatter against her armor as she bulls her way into the press, carving a path for others to follow.

You see Samara in battle for the first time, a blade in one hand and a whip of black lightning in the other. Her skill with the blade is impressive, but the whip is terrifying. Strikes cause the only real pain you see in your opponents, leaving them writhing on the ground, helpless as she finishes them with chops from her sword.

Sadie lends support from the air, giggling as she blasts foes with lightning from above, spouting puns like an action star. “I’ve got something SHOCKING for you! This’ll give you a JOLT!”

All the while, the rain of arrows never ceases, and before long, even the emotionless drones you’re facing lose ground. An enormous clang draws your attention, and you turn to see Denari on her knees before Uzume, the shattered stumps of her swords on the ground in front of her. Uzume is bleeding from several shallow cuts, but she grins as she brings her club down in a massive chop, connecting with the Lilim’s helmet with a sickening sound like a watermelon being smashed. Her head driven clean into her chest, Denari slumps lifeless to the ground.

Arrow fire stops suddenly, and you can hear the sound of hoofbeats as your cavalry closes the door on your trap. At the same time, the enemy **** seems to lose heart somehow, still fighting, but listlessly. The battle quickly turns to a slaughter, and you can tell that Reyka has either died or fled, leaving the army a shell of what it was.

You lower your bloody blade, letting the battle line pass you. The girls relax as well, and you nod.

“Well done. Let’s mop up and regroup.”
