Sarah handles it well

Sarah really surprised you. You had feared she would breakdown or be unable to deal with everything that had happened, but from the moment she learned about the surgery she seemed to have a calm almost stoic acceptance. Not that you were dismissing her grief! There was clearly a sadness about her, but she recovered quickly.

"I loved my mother," she explained once you asked, "but our relationship was complicated. Despite our disagreements and her disapproval of my life choices, I feel she would have gladly given her life for me or my siblings."

The bigger challenge for Sarah - and you, for that matter - was the news that she would have to pretend to be Dianna from now on. Sarah Baker was legally dead. In order to keep the media, and legal and medical communities from hounding her, she was now Dianna Laney for all intents and purposes. Sarah did not hesitate to agree, understanding the difficulties you both would have if the truth of the transplant got out. You struggled a bit more with the decision, hesitating to sign the NDA the hospital pushed. But ultimately it was Sarah's decision, and you couldn't argue with her reasoning.

The payout the hospital provided you two in exchange for signing was an added bonus.

Physically Sarah's recovery was remarkable. Dr Saunders ordered physical therapy for her to get accustomed to her new body, but after only two sessions she was moving as if she had always had Dianna's body. Dr Kerry was especially pleased. He tried explaining that her recovery was due to the nature of the surgery in that he had transplanted only Sarah's "upper brain", connecting it to Dianna's "lower brain" that remained in the body. The two parts of the brain were integrating, allowing Sarah to use Dianna's autonomic functions and controls.

His explanation was verbose and overly technical, making it difficult for you or Sarah to understand much more. But he did imply that Sarah could very well exhibit other aspects of Dianna such as habits, tastes, and other ingrained or deeply rooted behaviors. You didn't put much thought into his words, just being grateful that it meant that Sarah would not have to stay in the hospital much longer.
