Sarah agrees but has some conditions of her own.

"Okay, James, I guess you're right. It's alot for me to take in right now but I'll go along with it. I do want to at least meet Robert before signing off on all this, but I trust your opinion of him," she responded.

"Good," you said in relief. "I know it's not optimum but I truly think this is the only way for now." You gave her hand a gentle squeeze and leaned down to kiss her forehead.

She smiled at you and then announced "I do have a condition of my own."

"What is it?" you asked.

"I assume that Robert and I will divorce after everything settles down. But if I'm going to carry and deliver this baby - and go through all the pretense of being someone else - then I'm not just going to give up the child. I want to stay a part of baby's life after the birth. This will be my child as much as his and I will be involved."

You were a little surprised, not having gave much thought to what would happen after the baby was born. You had more-or-less assumed that Sarah would and you would move on, at most keeping in casual contact with Rob. But she sounded very adamant on this point, brooking no argument. Maybe you should have predicted something like this - Sarah had mentioned many times how she wished she hadn't put off trying to have a child for so long.

"Okay," you agreed, "if that's what you want. It only makes sense, I guess."

She looked in the eyes for several moments before nodding. "Okay, then, let's tell Robert."

You called him in and introduced him to Sarah. The meeting went surprisingly well. Sarah was genuinely grateful for his wife's sacrifice and Robert was happy to know his unborn child would be close to him. He did correct himself from calling Sarah 'Char' several times until Sarah finally told him gently to go ahead. "I'll have to get used to it soon enough anyway," she explained.

You all talked for several hours until it was time for Sarah to get some rest. You had a brief meeting with Doctors Saunders and Kerry - they wanted to run a few last tests and, if all went well, planned to release Sarah the next day.

You rested on a cot in Sarah's room that night, sleeping well for the first time in days now that you knew she was okay. The tests the next morning went smoothly and Sarah was discharged quickly with a promise to follow-up in a week.

You want to spend time with Sarah while you can, but you also have the unpleasant task of planning the funeral.
