Running Free

About a month later, I arrived at Vincent’s house. I was the man of the hour, yet I couldn’t help but feel out of place. About a year ago, I was some nobody, but now I’m the toast of the town. Then again, that might be about to change after I reveal what I have done.

Inside, I found a who’s who of Costa Rosa’s social life, all gathered to witness the unveiling of my art piece. Milling between them all are various servers serving drinks and appetizers. At the center of it all were Vincent and Jessica, who gave me a little wave. Vincent smiled at me, none the wiser of the affair I’ve been having with his wife.

“Glad you could make it, Tony.” Vincent said.

“Of course.”

After we shook hands, I turned to Jessica. I couldn’t help but question if anyone else noticed how much she radiated happiness in my presence. After all, I’m sure Costa Rosa’s high class was used to scandals involving trophy wives with other guys. Then again, for once in her life, Jessica didn’t seem to care one bit what other people thought about her.

After I spent a bit of time mingling with everyone, Vincent walked over to my covered art piece and clinked his glass.

“Greetings everyone. I’ve invited you all here to witness the unveiling of an art piece that captures the beauty of my wife, Jessica Sinclair. This piece has been painstakingly crafted by one of Costa Rosa’s brightest up-and-coming artists, Tony Debicki.”

I received a round of applause.

“Now, without further ado, let’s see this masterpiece.”

Vincent unveiled my artwork. To his surprise, it was a painting of a herd of horses running free. He had no idea what it meant, but when I saw that smile on Jessica’s face, I knew she understood the meaning of the picture.
