Chapter 16 by TheBlinded TheBlinded

What's next?

Ruby hit a student from another school

It took a moment for Ruby to readjust to the suddenly relocation as she found herself in the crowd getting onto the Bullheads. Eyes darting around, she quickly located Weiss and Jaune. It took a little bit of work to push against the crowd, but she managed to slip into the same Bullhead. She wasn’t able to sit next to them though. Instead, the seat across from them was open. It was close enough to listen without seeming suspicious. While everyone was buckling up, Ruby glanced at the girl next to her, who was holding up a hand mirror. It was the first glimpse Ruby received of what she looked like to others.

Her hair was bright green and swept to her right, matching her eyes. Two black facial markings were on her cheeks. Glancing down, Ruby saw the dark purple hooded sweater over a mauve sweater. To finish off her ensemble were black shorts and black shoelaced high top sneakers. The mirror showed what she looked like to others, but she was sure her body looked weird with the green hair. The girl gave off a punk skater girl vibe.

Doesn’t matter, Ruby thought. It’s not going to affect anything how I look. Whoever this girl is, she likes to dress this way. She could have dug through her new belongings to find an ID, but it wasn’t worth the hassle. There were more important things to do.

Like listen to the people talking in front of her.

“…afterwards I thought we could check out the festival stalls for an hour or two until the movie started,” Jaune explained. “Then, depending on how you feel, we could get dinner or head back.”

“It seems you put some thought into this,” Weiss huffed, though she sounded slightly less irritated then before. “I do appreciate it, but you understand we have nothing in common.”

“You don’t know that,” Jaune protested. “My mother always told me dates were to get to know someone before any serious commitment. We might find something.”

“I seriously doubt it,” Weiss replied and then raised an eyebrow. “I hope you aren’t depleting your bank account for this long shot. I would feel bad if you had to live on scraps for the next month.”

“See,” Jaune said proudly. “There’s something we have in common. Neither of us want to be a burden to others.”

He’s actually doing pretty well, Ruby thought impressed. Her stomach turned slightly as the thought, but not as bad as it did before. The girl whose life she occupied wasn’t into Jaune and dulled the feelings slightly. Jaune also didn't seem to be having his normal motion sickness issues this time, so he probably took some medicine before hand. That was smart on his part. He was really trying.

“It was more along the lines that if Ruby found out, I would never hear the end of it,” Weiss refuted.

Good job at ruining the mood, Weiss.

“Don’t worry,” Jaune reassured her. “I have some money saved up for this sort of thing. I asked you out, so let me make an impression. Show you I’m serious.”

“If you must,” Weiss sighed, seeming to accept this date was happening.

Weiss didn’t hate Jaune, she even admitted that. It was more of his persistence in asking her out, along with the weird ways he tried that irritated her. The serenade still caused her to burn with embarrassment. As Ruby listened, she noticed Jaune was mainly trying to get Weiss involved in conversation, rather than trying to push into something more romantic. He was honestly trying to get to know her and let her see a different side of him. It was working because as the time passed, Weiss’s replies became a little longer.

When the Bullhead landed and everyone departed, Ruby had to hurry to keep up with her targets. She didn’t have super speed anymore and, with the Vytal Festival in town, things were getting crowded on the weekends. The most she could do was keep Jaune and Weiss in sight, unable to get close enough to hear them. An issue came up when they arrived at the café Jaune had a reservation at. It wasn’t the classiest place in Vale, as there was no doubt on Ruby’s mind he couldn’t afford those places, but it was rather nice. Weiss might have come here for a quiet casual dining experience. Well, casual for her. The place was upper middle close for most people.

Ruby looked down at her clothes. The life she currently inhabited would normally never be found here. Her instincts were sending out warning bells. She could go ahead and try to get in if she wanted to, though it would stand out and probably fail. Another option was to switch with someone already inside, like an employee or a customer.
