Chapter 5 by Fiftyfiftyfifty Fiftyfiftyfifty

What do you do?

Return the coin.

You walk back out and see that she definitely never left. She looks at you, wipes away a bit of drool from her lip, and contrary to her Amazoness-esque exterior, she now looks like a giddy schoolgirl. You hold the coin back to her, and she frowns in confusion.

"Hey, uh. The lady behind the counter said you can't ask people to do this anymore. Sorry. I tried. But I probably shouldn't be apologizing, since you used me!"

She reels back, shocked and caught in the act. Carefully, she plucks the coin from your hand and stows it away into a pouch at her side. Then, her fearful demeanour turns gradually into frustration. You can hear to growl quietly under her breath.

"I can't believe that woman!" she shouts. When she swings her arm to the side, you actually see the wood of the wall splinter under the strength of her fist. "How about I go back in there and cause more trouble..."

"Please don't do that," you request. "They're just trying to run a business. But you can make it up to me, for lying."

She crosses her arms over her chest. "What are you going to ask of me?" asks quietly with terror on her face.

"Wait, what? Nothing weird! I just want to ask you some questions. And I don't want you to call them stupid. I just want answers."

"Oh. That's easy enough. Ask away. But first, I'm Niki of the Vakila clan." She extends her hand. "I know what you're thinking. It's a long journey here. But I'm not the only one of my kind in the city. There just aren't many. I just sought adventure a distance from home."

When you shake it, you witness her strength once again. The grip is more than you're ready for. "Kyle Warren, and I have no idea what you're talking about."

"Wow. You really don't know anything, huh? Well shoot. I know what that's like. I guess I should have been able to tell from your weird clothing. When I first came here, I had to learn how different the Tiverans are. Not only that, but there are so many different kinds of folk in this city. I'll tell you what I know though. I do feel kinda bad."

"My clothes aren't that weird," you mutter.

"Hey don't worry about it. Where I'm from, we don't wear clothes at all."

You stare for a moment, shocked by her statement. You can't help but imagine it. "Seriously?"

She laughs out loud. "Of course not! We're not nudists. The look on your face was really funny, though." She smacks your shoulder.

Owch. "Right, well... This question is a weird one, but where do you think a guy like me can make some money?"

Niki scratches her cheek as she ponders. "Are you an adventurer?"

The idea of being the classic adventuring hero hadn't really dawned on you before now. This is how only the greatest roleplaying games begin--a boy meets a beautiful woman, and he rises to heroic stature as the saviour of the world. All you need is some equipment, a party, and a quest. Without thinking more about it, you blurt out your answer with pride.

"Yes I am."

She grins and grabs you by the shoulders, and completely invades your personal space bubble. "That's perfect! I've been looking for somebody to start a party with. You know, a group of people take on quests. Money, power, fame... Come on. Let's go down to the Adventurer's Guild and find a couple more folks. It's a lot easier to recruit when you're not alone. We could be the best party in all of Abso!"

If she's a fighter of some sort that wants to quest, how has she not been able to find a party before? That's really worrying. I really don't have a lot of options right now, though. I might as well give it a shot.

"Let's do it, Niki. Lead the way."
